We are returning to SXM in two weeks, staying above Happy Bay. Does anyone know if Dany is still serving food and drinks at Happy Bay? So looking forward to this time away together! Jim
I just returned from staying at Bleu Emeraude and walked to Happy Bay every morning it did not appear to be open of course it was in the morning but building looked abandoned and not used in a while
He was there I think it was Friday Jan 3th, did not see food cooking but got a beer after walking over from FBBC just for the walk. It had been years since we had gone over there, lots of people on the path to/from Friars and it was the most amount of people on the beach I had ever seen. Beach and water at both Friars and Happy Bay were near perfect so that may be part of it.
He is there every day however his place always looks closed until midday. If you walk around when it looks closed and say hi you can get drinks. Try it!
The walk back up is challenging especially if you’re lugging a lot of beach stuff. It’s definitely doable for the bottom row of villas but if you’re at the top of Mont Choisy, the last leg up the hill is excruciating during the heat of the day. The stairs and path to the Friars/Happy path can be really slippery after a rain too. We are in our early 60’s in decent shape. We do use the path a couple of times each stay but usually drive down to the small parking lot at the white gate. It’s a longer walk but it’s much easier. I would walk down from the villas all the time but we carry chairs and a cooler.
We went to Happy Bay via Friar's today. No "pebbles" at Friar's which was active but Happy Bay was not. Only a small number of visitors at Happy Bay with most not needing a swimsuit..
Pic of beach at both..
BTW..the walk over the hill to HB has been recently cleared out of brush but the rocks are still an issue Another thing...we usually have seen 30+ iguanas each way over the hill. Last year it decreased to around 15 each way..today only 3 going and 2 on the return
Edit to add: as mentoned in another post the road to HB was not bad at all...once you got past the beginning hump
We visit Danny every trip to Happy Bay. Danny arrives very early in the morning. About 7-8:00. He never opens the front gate of the beach bar until about noon. The back gate is always open. Yell out his name and he will answer you. Usually he is collecting firewood for cooking chicken and ribs in the wooded area. If you want chicken or ribs for lunch, he prefers you tell him around 10-11:00. He also sells Carib beer and Rum punch. I think his chicken plate is awesome. Tastes great and served with rice and potato salad. Huge portion too.
