Old Cranky Todd’s rant of the day ! I hope you laugh along, a bit.

What is it with people that post that “this is the best…”blank”..on island”. Not stating this is the “best I have had”, but simply this “blank” is the best on island!

I will start with a common one, a hamburger. I will state that life could be spent searching for the best hamburger and it would not be a life wasted. Besides it being a matter of opinion, how many have you tried on island? I figured that I have had burgers from around 35 different places on island, based on my estimate is I have tried 15% of the places that serve a burger on island. I don’t think I could tell you my favorite of the 35, let alone estimate the other two hundred places that serve burgers on island. I think it would be insulting for me with my limited experience to try to state which is best.

Car rental – seriously, I realize pimp’n ain’t easy but have you rented from all 40 or so companies? NO! I am not even sure of who I would say is the best out of the 10 or so companies I rented from. I would note, not a bad experience with any of them. Share your favorites and why, but relax on the pimp’n a bit, it is annoying.

If you belong to a FB site or other website that channels island businesses who are being suggested by their “experts” to sponsors that pay them ransom, leave the bs site because they are not experts. They are paid to direct you to those sponsors. Don’t be a lemming, find sites that give you unbiased ideas based on their experiences not who is paying them for pimp’n services. Many of you know who I am referring to.

I have enjoyed most of my over 20 years now on TTOL, rant over, for now. Merry Christmas!
T

I very much agree with your accounts, especially about the facebook sites, one in particular. You are being steered towards a business they have some affiliation with, design their website or get something in return for their "expert" opinion. It is akin to shopping the cruise lines "recommended" stores. Big $$ spent on advertising and big % of $$ back to the cruise line when a purchase is made.

One the "best" burger thing, I have had a good one and one that was not so good at the same place a year or two apart.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

I so agree with you, Todd. It isn't just the Facebook sites; it's here as well. How can anyone possibly state something is "the best" unless ALL alternatives have been tried? They can't, and it's a ridiculous statement. Thanks for posting.

I agree withGaKaye----love this post. And with LB12SXM it's the BEST post, and boy have I read quite a few; some negivave, some pushing a place too much without thought to how many people have the same needs here.. but it's better than a bunch of negativity.

You made my day today and I just might stuff you in one of my stockings to hang over the fireplace. Oh wait---I'm not sure what's my BEST one.

They can only state it's the "best" if they add "in my own opinion" then it's more qualified to their criteria. But to act as a know it all and declare with authority it's the "best" is BS.

Very interesting topic/rant I also agree your best and my best could be polar opposites.
Now Hamburgers or cheeseburgers from Slovenia to Taiwan and In between I have sent a many to the gallows. The best I have ever had came from my grill. Now on a side note during covid my job had me in Taiwan and after a 2 week quarantine in a Taiwan hotel eating only traditional Taiwan food being the only American there in that hotel. Once released I stopped at a McDonald's and that big Mac was GREAT so good I ate 2.
So best also depends for me on where I am and what are my options and how hungry I'm I 😋

Um.....

Am I able to say that TravelTalk Online is the BEST site for informed advice regarding travel, especially to St Martin?

Great post! I do appreciate people sharing when they've had a good meal or experience, but your “best” one might not rate based on what I'm looking for. My daughter did try to find the best molten chocolate dessert one year. We stayed in Grand Case for a week and ate at a six of the great restaurants on the main street and she had the chocolate dessert at every one that offered it! Of course I don't remember who she ranked best anymore.

And a good chance they are all made at the same bakery.

No, molten chocolate desserts are not made at a bakery. The batter has to be placed in the oven for a short time just before serving. They were all good, but different in texture, how dark the chocolate was, size of serving and other characteristics.
