WestJet 2276 are Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes, bigger than the 737- 800 series.

Our Itinerary shows the flight as 2276 with the aircraft being a 737-800 and out 2277 return is a 737-700. So I am not sure if the flight number has anything to do with the aircraft on the route. And of course, WestJet notes that the actual aircraft on any flight can change at the last minute.

"WestJet notes that the actual aircraft on any flight can change at the last minute." True with any airline. Ours has already changed for our May flight for equipment. Both flight number and seats but same departure and arrival time are the same.

737MAX8 aircraft are the same fuselage size as the 737-800. Basically just different engines and different winglets.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 offers a longer range and higher capacity than the third-generation 737-800.

My neighbour is a 737 WestJet pilot and he says the WestJet flight numbers honestly don’t mean too much. The way they organize them are 0-100 overseas, 100-999 is domestic, 1000-1999 is USA, 2000-2999 México and Caribbean and then 4000-4999 rescue flights, 8000-8999 charters, 9000-9999 are cargo.
Some times just with a slight change in times or weekly schedule the flight number could change. This winter, WestJet has increased their schedule to SXM to fly on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. They may also have another Westjet flight going that same direction with a similar flight number around the same time. For ease of communication with ATC they could change it.
My flight this past October was 2652 and 2653. But my upcoming flight this month is 2276 and 2277.
I am only guessing that adding Monday and Friday to the 2024–2025 schedule had something to do with it.

Longer range on the MAX8, yes. Higher capacity than 737-800, no. As an aircraft mechanic for a major airline we operate both models. The interior fuselage size is the same. How an airline configures the seating arrangement may differ. Per Westjet.com, they have 2 seating layouts for their 737-800 (174-189 seats). They have 4 seating layouts for their MAX8 (174-183 seats). Hope this helps.

The overhead bins on the Max are large enough that they will hold carry-ons on their side, basically doubling their capacity. George

WestJet changed the flight numbers from 2652/2653 to 2276/2277, effective October 31st, 2024. It has nothing to do with the size of the aircraft. They have flown different variations of the 737, from the 737-700 to the 737-MAX8, on the YYZ/SXM flights for years. Nothing has changed in that regard. While they have increased the number of flights per week this year, especially in peak season, they still only fly one flight per day, so the same flight numbers apply every day, unless a significant schedule change happens on short notice. In that case, it may be assigned a new temporary flight number. One unfortunate thing that may sometimes happen currently, is that older 737s from Swoop and Lynx Air may be utilized as they shuffle aircraft within the fleet. These are single-cabin aircraft of various layouts without a separate Premium cabin. This has been made necessary due to the holdup in receiving additional new 737-MAX8 aircraft from Boeing. There are a lot of complaints about it. I talked about how this impacted me in a previous post: https://www.traveltalkonline.com/ub...r-westjet-flight-changes.html#Post324311
