Rainy, cloudy day in Saba, so got time for a scattered report

Need for a quick report on last night in Orient
Wanted something simple and have read some good feedback on Bona Mama in Orient
I questioned why anyone would do take away while on SXM and now I know

Besides pizza, roasted chicken, ham and pork, they offer several items already prepared along with a weekly entree with salad and dessert for 19.90e

This week was a nice salad with bacon, cheese, potatoes, pine nuts with a fried egg
The main course of veal stew was tender served over rice with carrots in a wonderful sauce
Dessert was a chocolate dome with hazelnut filling
we took one of each of the above on the counter while my wife waited for her Bufflone pizza with tomato sauce, prosciutto, cheery tomatoes, burrata, arugula,
parmesan, not too over powering truffle sauce, mozzarella and olives
Pizza crust was very good and the pizza also tasty although most of the outside of the pizza was not sauced or topped

we also added some cannelloni pasta with asparagus, burrata and pine nuts for 10e

It was hilarious watching the pizza guy burning pizza after pizza and the waitress just shaking her head,
smoke filled the inside of the restaurant but after the smoke cleared, he got the hand of it and we took "home" our food to enjoy on our second floor candle lit deck overlooking the pool to the ocean with the music filling in air from the last night of Kontiki

My thanks to whomever recommended this take away

Next morning we stopped at Chez Fernand bakery in marigot for the pistachio croissant along with a hazelnut filled croissant for a treat while waiting for our flight to Saba to visit with some friends
I find this bakery has a few selections from other bakeries we go to

Never being on the correct side on our usual flight home to the states, the winair prop allowed plenty of time to view the island at a lowered attitude
Hey is that JD at the horney toad?

Please find some humor and this is only a jest
While waiting at the airport we saw all the workers completing their work, actually they were handling out awards

a quick 12 minute flight over still allowed time for my wife to worry about the landing
since I was seated in front of her for comfort, the ex Governor of Saba helped her through the landing which did not seem bad at all and not as exciting as St Barts drop over the mountain landing I have saw

we would later speak to him at the grocery store in town

with only 1000 some residents and our friends having a family history on the island, we quickly knew many as like SXM everyone is so friendly and a must wave to all you pass by in the infrequent car passing by
We are staying in the windward side among such beauty with an opposite view over to Saint Martin
it was so clear that I could make out the cruise ship in Phillipsburg with a naked eye
No naked people here and you must wear a shirt in town as it is against the law, certainly more formal

there is nice breeze most of the time, but also hot and humid when the wind is not blowing up the gut ( a ravine in the mountain)
1034 steps to the top but not for us

our accommodations were lovely and quaint, less than 10 minute walk to "town" where there are about 7 choices to eat along with 2 small food markets and a bakery with limited selections although all we had were good, you needed to purchase early in the day because of limited production

Being low season, most restaurants were closed
We did enjoy the oldest restaurant where locals celebrate special occasions
Dining on Saba is a bit more casual and certainly not all that fancy

While we enjoyed quite time together on the island, we did visit the local history museum which our friends had made plans for it to be opened just for us along with a tour of the 5 square mile island, learning and seeing the other side of the island where the medical school is (no jordan village here)

Besides spending time with our friends, my favorite thing was spotting all the local wild fruits, just at the pool, we lounged among coconuts, mangos (out of season), green island papaya and unripe bananas trees
I hatched down a few oranges hanging outside of cottage and also spotted wild pumpkins and guava berries

beautiful wild flowers grow everywhere and are a photographers dream

unless you scuba or hike, there is not much to do besides RELAX

looking forward to another 10 days in Maho and hopefully meeting our new Italian friends that we met while in Orient

We absolutely loved our times on Saba for so many reasons. It’s the perfect spot if you’re in need of some serious time for limin’

Respectfully,

pat

As it should be in any town you venture into. Saba is a real Gem glad you ae enjoying it. That pizza needed more filling toward the edges for my taste.

Thanks for the pics and more importantly the info about Bona Mama. That sounds like a great stop on our arrival day in November.

We really enjoyed Bona Mama in January. Our pizza was not as "sparse" as the one you pictured. Sounds like maybe a new pizza chef figuring out his way in the kitchen. In January, they only had the rotisserie chickens and a few other items available in the day, and the dedicated pizza chef came in late afternoon. We stopped in on our way back from the beach, around 2:00 pm, and order / pay for a pizza that we would then pick up later in the evening. Seemed to work out good considering the place got quite busy by early evening. Wonderful photos of Saba!
