Wow, these jets were the mainstay of the long haul fleet after retiring the Northwest 747s. The 777 is a 25 year old design but most of Deltas are like 10-15 years old. Airlines have always had either huge capital purchases or leases on aircraft and they often kept less efficient but fully paid for and depreciated birds like MD-88s because they could make money with them.
Now, it looks like a permanent decision to go all new and efficient and chuck even half used jets in favor of the new ones.
Wow. It’s truly going to be a new world in commercial aviation. Only the strong will survive. Airlines will only get one chance to figure out a winning formula.
