We made it back home after a wonderful ten day trip to the Puerto Plata area. January 24, we stepped out of the airport POP and there stood a taxi driver with the Eden Bay logo. On our way we passed through Cabarete, the monotony of the long trip and countless pot holes beginning to wear, our taxi driver Israel, told us proudly he lived on that road to the right. Grace and I made it to the Eden Bay resort around 5:30 pm after a 1 ½ hr. taxi ride with Richard and Lisa, second timers. We had never checked into a resort so easily; were greeted with a rum drink, a smile, and an easing greeting from Patricia “you must be Robert and Grace?” We passed by the main desk without signing in, just told we can use the lap top to use the internet. We were given a short tour of the upper part of the complex and shown to our room by Ramon. We opened our carry on bag and put our tipping cash, my billfold, and Pass Ports into the safe, never thinking again about needing them at Eden Bay. With no chain to carry the keys on we put the keys on a ribbon. After taking a shower with plenty of heated water to refresh from the long trip we put on shorts, comfortable loose shirts and headed to the dining area for dinner. We ordered from a choice of three entrees and desserts. Adjacent to the main area is one of the hot tubs where we found a couple enjoying the evening. We found the water and company so naturally inviting to shed our dinner dress and just enjoy being nude first time at Eden Bay. When leaving the hot tub, I discovered the ribbon untied and the keys somewhere in the pool. The keys were easily found in the hot tub to our relief. The couple saying they didn’t lock their room. The next day we did the same and I slipped the safe key into my luggage pocket. Grace locked the traveler checks and her billfold in her suitcase. After all this is Eden! After the first full day and being locked out of our room, I decided to carry the keys on me. Next time, I will bring a neck lanyard.
We slept well each night, eagerly we ate breakfast and headed down to the lower pool where we sunned and joined in the pool exercises with Ramon or Boobetta. A friendly game or two of water volleyball and sunning round the beach and pool made for a relaxing morning. At 12 o’clock, their time, the food was served and enjoyed by all. Games were often played as the afternoon leisurely passed on. I enjoyed the beauty of the shore area, the breaching of whales in the open blue waters, and even the girls made for some enjoyable sight seeing. I asked Grace if she did the same with the men...she didn’t comment on that one! There is lots of room and this place is as close to the Garden of Eden as we have experienced. We just stayed 4 nights...and of course they came too soon. The Dominican goat, conch, and pork dishes were outstanding. The sweet roles were homemade like my mother used to make. The staff did what ever to make everything outstanding.
We had an odd experience with our Pass Ports. When we opened the safe they were no longer in sight. After we made it to Puerto Plata, Grace found the Pass Ports mysteriously tucked under her suitcase’s stiffener rib. Anyway, Eden Bay will be a place we will have many memories of.
