Just got back from a fantastic trip to Anegada & Guana Island in late May. We're always surprised why more folks don't visit this time of the year, but let's hope they don't start, we like the quiet. Anyway, first time to Anegada and I can say is "WOW!". It's everything we've ever wanted in an island -- 100% beautiful beach, water, people, food, etc. No one around and nothing to do. Stayed at Lavenda Breeze, which was just fantastic. George & Reggie have put together a fabulous little spot. The house has everything you could ever want (except AC) and is just stunning. It might not be the most palatial, but it is very, very comfortable and the location, basically all alone on one of the islands best beaches is just breathtaking. When we were there it was uncharacteristically still (not a breeze to be had) so it would get pretty warm at night (and the mosquito's were out in FORCE, island wide), but when you're at a place like this you learn to adapt. 3 bedrooms, but I would say the house is probably perfect for 1 or 2 couples (plus maybe a child or two). Any more and you would have to be very comfortable with each other. The house comes fully equipped with many conveniences, lounge chairs to towels and much more (no snorkel gear). Highly recommended.
George, who do I see if I want to build a little place here.
Food was great. We thought we'd died and gone to lobster heaven. Basically, all the 6 or so restaurants serve the same things (ckn, beef, pork, fish, shrimp, lobster) at the same time 7:30 p.m. You must call ahead to order what you want. I know there are those that think differently, but here's our take on our favorite Anegada restaurants:
Potter's: Best lobster -- huge 2-3 lbs each. great atmosphere. Mr. Potter is very nice.
Lobster Trap: Our 2nd favorite spot, best atmosphere, very romantic. Were the only one's dining, which we couldn't understand. More people should try this because it is a real find.
Anegada Reef: Good, saw most people here, pretty crowded but Potter's right next door was better all the way around
Neptune's Treasure, was good too, but somewhat of a disappointment considering the accolades it receives. Lobsters were 1/2 the size of Potters. You can eat inside here which is nice if you want a break from the swarms of mosquitoes. Did I mention them? They deserve double special mention because if there is even a drop of rain or stillness in the air the come out big time. We had bites on our bites. As I said, you find a way to cope, Carib helps, but just a warning.
Went to Belle's BBQ at Lit Bit Taz Friday night. It was fun, good for something different. Get there early before the fried bread/Johnnie cakes run out. FABU potato salad.
Pam's for cinnamon buns was great, but you never knew when she was going to be open or close, baking or not. Roll the dice it's worth it even for other stuff, like fresh bread.
If you're staying on island you can pretty much buy almost everything you want there food-wise, except specialty cheeses & meats. We had some things brought over from Tortola so we ate most breakfasts, snacks at the house and out every night for dinner.
Booze
Big Bamboo & Cow's Wreak were just perfect, fantasy beach bars. Great lunch food and drinks. I never wanted to leave. Flash of Beauty is also a great spot, though I don't know about food. And the best snorkeling on the island, we thought, right out front. Potters has a nice little bar too.
Overall, Anegada was fantastic. We rented a jeep for the week and tooled around. Nothing to do at all but sit in the sun, eat, drink and snokel. If you want more, then this place is not for you.
Guana Island
Hands down the best resort we've been to in the islands and we've been to some nice places -- PSV, Biras Creek, Ritz Rose Hall, Le Sport, etc. It has the nicest beach -- a long stretch of pure white sand & fabulous water and the best food. We loved the honor bar system (fully stocked bars where you help yourself) and the shared meals. We met some really nice people! The rooms were nice and varied widely. We stayed in one right behind he kitchen which was ok. But it would be hard to say what/where were better rooms, they all had their pluses and minuses. It was also very still when we were there, so you want to request a second fan. It got esp hot at night. You have to love to sweat. And there were some bugs. If this place had AC it would be heaven. But again, the fabulous beauty, killer beach & water and incredible food, more than made up for it. In our opinion the private North Beach cottage was not worth the price from the looks of it. And the resort's website doesn't begin to do it all justice. In fact, the website does a down right poor job of showing off how great a place this resort is.
When we were there the owner, and entourage, were there fixing up their HUGE mansion (which I hope blends into the landscape a little better when finished). This did make for little bit of awkwardness when mixing as they do there. As Roger, the resort GM mentioned. Some times this private island is 100% resort, sometimes is 100% estate and sometimes it's in between. It probably works better as one or the other. For example, we were told we might not be able to sit where we wanted for dinner because the owners might want it. We didn't get the room we requested because the owner wanted it for their guests. I asked the owner if I could borrow an empty seat from their table and I was told he wasn't sure he could spare it. ?? You see what I'm saying I think. They own the island so they can do what they want, but for @$600 a night, I think paying guests should ALWAYS come first. Even with this, I would recommend this resort highly & will go back. It was very, very nice.
BTW, Flew Clair Aero over. Like bus service. $33 per person. And MUCH faster than sailing. No problems. Chartered on Fly-BVI back. Fun flight on little Cessna. No problems.
Hope this info helps. Thanks for all the help I received.
