Hi,

Well seeing as it was requested, I had been write up my trip report for our holiday in Dominica.

Well I was supposed to be going to Virgin Gorda for a long weekend over Easter, but my wicked boyfriend instead drove me to the airport on Tortola and handed me tickets to Dominica!!! Complete surprise absolutely amazed.

So far so good, but then the tickets we Liat, so we waited and we waited as the flight was 2 hours delayed, we finally took off, flew to St Marten and on to Antigua. Only to be told we were too late and that the airport in Dominica would be shut!!

So Liat put us up in the airport hotel which really is the hole in the Caribbean. Although to be honest the food was simple but good and the rum flowed freely and we did really get to know the other passengers who made the experience fun, but the hotel having told us they would wake us at 4:30 for our flight at 5 actually banged briefly on the door at 4:55, but anyway the disaster getting there just made Dominica even better…….

We finally arrived in canefield airport at about 9am the taxi was there waiting for us, apparently he had spent ages waiting for us to arrive but the taxi driver didn’t seem bothered, he quite happily grabbed our bags and drove us through Roseau to our hotel Castle Comfort Dive Lodge.

The people couldn’t have been nicer, were we ready to dive right now? He would stop the boats and make them come back or would we rather have breakfast and then he would take us out to the dive boats when we were ready?

We opted for breakfast, showered changed and had the most scrumptious breakfast with fresh fruit like you just don’t get in the BVI and fresh fruit juice as well. We were then whisked off in the boat to the dive boat where the others had just finished their first dive.

It was so good to be back in the water and feel the stresses induced by Liat disappear and the diving was phenomenal!!! So unlike the BVI, beautiful deep wall dives teaming with fish, so many fish maybe not as much coral but the coral was brightly coloured and healthy.

In the afternoon we rather lazily had a beautiful lunch in the hotel and then stretched out on the sun beds and went to sleep. We then did an afternoon dive with someone else staying at the hotel called Flash. We picked up some tanks and just jumped off the end of the pier at the hotel, being dark sand it looked a bit murky but the life was amazing, there were hundred of moray and chain eels everywhere you looked, puffer fish and loads of juvenile life, fantastic.

The only problem we had was we didn’t precook a hire car and being Easter weekend we couldn’t get hold of one till the second to last day but once we did and get out exploring the island it was fantastic such a beautiful island and the locals were so friendly, every small town you drove through they would wave and say hello.

Also got to see three seahorses (although I ran low on air before seeing the first one) and we went on a whale watching trip which was well worth it as we saw 17 sperm whales!!! A mixture of adult, juvenile and calves, truly amazing.

The only thing we found a little disappointing were the restaurants, the food at the hotel was fantastic but as were weren’t on a package we thought we would try a few other restaurants, we went to the hotel next door, which again was nice, just simple and straight forward, nothing special. We had a look in Roseau but couldn’t really find another restaurants beyond a Chinese, so we went to Fort Young, amazing place but we missed the nice restaurant and ended up having a buffet with the other guests, which seemed to be a bit of a free for all where the large group of Americas next to us help themselves to all three courses at the same time (obviously worried they would run out) and then left most of what they had taken on the table which seemed very wasteful!!

But anyway in conclusion we only made it to one waterfall – the emerald pool- unfortunately we picked a day when a cruise ship was in so it was a bit busy, the island was fantastic the scenery breath taking, the people so friendly and the diving out of this world. But shush don’t tell everyone I loved the few numbers of tourists and hope to go back as soon as possible!!!!
