We had heard of this 'naturist village' in southwestern Spain, so decided to try it. Turns out to be less than we thought. The Vera Playa Club Hotel is part of a chain. It is indeed located on a stretch of nudist beach, just east of Vera. There are a number of 'urbanazaciones', essentially blocks of mostly residences, and several of those are 'naturist'. Unfortunately, they are also quite well sealed off from the world so we were unable to see them. This hotel, run by Playa Hotels, is a bit odd in character. It has really nice facilities, including a big swimming pool, is right on the nudist beach, and it would be a nice nudist facility, but for a couple of issues. It says it requires people to be naked in the pool area during the day, and generally people comply with this, except for the isolated small group of teenagers and an occasional small child. The rest of the hotel is clothing optional during the day, except for the restaurant, which requires people to be fully clothed. (Some commentators say they require long trousers, but that turns out to be not right: they do tolerate shorts on both men and women). And the whole joint requires clothing after either 8:00 or 9:00. We were told by the bar staff that 9:00 was the limit and we exceeded 8:00 on a couple of occasions. We also went out of the hotel for dinner and found that the joints right by expected customers to be clothed.
The notion of a 'naturist village' implies more than is here, but maybe we missed something obvious. We found only one supermarket, on the edge of the grouping of urbanazations, and it was definitely not nudist friendly. We did not find a single bar or restaurant in the area that was nudist friendly, and the hotel we are staying in has this odd set of rules.
But it does have a nice climate, at least in early August.
