Jan 4: Castries
Stopped at the little place next to Rituals for some smoked herring on a bake with a cup of cocoa tea; then I went to Rituals for a coffee. All of my electronics were getting low on power, the hotel desk didn’t have any adaptors so when Trendy came by we walked over to Johnsons Hardware and the marina but no one had any. We decided to take the bus into Castries and check the shops. We stopped off at the market and looked around a bit; I bought some coca sticks to take home, I’ve been using a little in my curries and sauces not enough to give it flavor but to bring out the taste of the other ingredients.

We headed down the sidestreets and finally found an electronics shop, Starlite Electronics, that had them for $20 EC. . Lunch was at a food stall, curried lamb and fresh ginger beer, with a shot of Chairmens courtesy of Trendy’s flask. We took the bus back to the hotel and spent the afternoon lounging around the pool and the balcony finishing off the mixers and half bottles of rum in the fridge. Dan had arranged for a taxi to Anse La Rey for fish Friday, with Mike and Debby so we all met at the hotel bar at 6:00. It is a pretty long ride on the winding roads and over the hills but Tiger, our driver, took his time and got us there without stress.
The food stalls along the street
It wasn’t too busy, there were groups of tourist arriving periodically, but the lines were short and most dishes were in good supply. My main objective for the night was a whole Red Snapper, which I found for $15 EC, it was cooked in foil and the jucies formed a rich broth. I had a few of my other favorites and most everybody tried new dishes, including some huge whelks, about the size of tennis balls. The band that was playing would be well advised not to sell their fishing boats yet, but the singer was very animated and that made it fun to watch for a while.
At one of the stalls
Around 9:30 we drove back to Rodney Bay, we got off at the hotel while Dan and Em went up to the marina where they left the dingy. My initial plan was to go to the Jump Up for a while then down to the strip, but there were strong intermittent showers blowing through and I just didn’t have it in me to stand in the rain and drink. Trendy came by and we had a couple on the balcony, he tried to talk me into going out but by I was done.
