Interesting comments following the news article, as there usually are. I recall the man convicted in the murder of the couple at Ocean Club was also a security guard. Was he an employee of Checkmate as well?

3 people shot - oh my! 69 people shot with 6 fatally this past weekend in Chicago! I wonder if they were registered gun owners! We're going for a record this year - Cubs & killings!

The only gate is on the road. The hill to the south and the dirt road to the south aren't gated and nothing can stop people wandering in from the beach. That is true of most beach resorts though...

There is a back staircase on the north side of the Westin that employees use to enter the second floor car garage. It is not secure and hidden behind bushes. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/impatient.gif" alt="" />

One shooting in SXM when money and roberry was the motive is obvious. 69 shot in Chicago over memorial day weekend is very unsettling and considering over 450 shot in the first 5 months...That's really unsettling. SXM is still a relatively safe place to travel to if you are smart. If you walk around being flashy with a ton of cash problems can find you.

SXM is less than 100k or, for perspective, roughly the same as Lawrence, Kansas. On a per capita basis SXM had more shootings over Memorial Day weekend than Chicago.
