I am working on my June itinerary. I heard (don't ask me where) there are now moorings at Sandy Spit. It this true? We have seen boats anchoring there overnight but it seems rather exposed.

I am trying to decide where to spend our last night before an early morning return to Soper's Hole to disembark.

We plan on spending most of the day at White Bay then need to relocate for the evening mooring. We will have already stayed at Diamond Cay. We are not fond of Little Harbor. May consider Great Harbor, JVD but prefer a quiet anchorage for our last night aboard. Our last night will be a Friday night so opting for Great Harbor may be nice to check out Foxy's as in all 8 visits to BVIs never been there.

Suggestions appreciated. Thank you. Counting down the days!

I would do Great Harbor and plan on Foxy's and/or Corsairs. Can't go wrong with either place.

JMO, but I'd grab a ball in Great Harbor and cab it to White Bay for the day.

Great question about Sandy Split. .... But I wish we had a "sticky post" that reminds people that planning a very specific itinerary is futile. Where to sail and where to spend the night is highly dependent on the weather and sea conditions. Exposed locations such as Sandy Split are even more suseptible to poor conditions and can't be planned in advance.

I recommend taking a mooring at Diamond Cay as it is protected in all weather conditions including a north swell. Foxy's Taboo for dinner and happy hour at the B-Line bar.

I did see moorings at Sandy Cay, but wasn't close enough to tell if they were NPT daytime moorings or overnight ones; I suspect the former.

I agree with Kirk, grab a ball in Great Harbor earlier in the day and take a cab over to White Bay. Only caveat is that you may hear music from Foxy's until 12 or 1am on a Friday night - it just depends on how many people are there and how late they want to party - so if you want quiet, I'd stick to the outside balls in the mooring field.

Sandy Spit are daytime moorings only

I was at Sandy Spit last May and there we no moorings there that I saw but I wasn't looking. Anchoring was very easy. It is exposed and I would not recommend overnighting there. If you grab a mooring towards the back of Great Harbor (farthest out) it is not noisy at all. We love Great Harbor and typically moor there early and either dinghy to White Bay (conditions permitting) or grab a cab for $5 (or walk).

Unfortunately we are not down the same time as you. We are bringing along friends whose children are finishing up school (one of them graduating from grade 6 with many big events they cannot miss), so we will be there June 26-July 10.

We typically go late May, early June. This will be the latest in the season we have visited the Caribbean.

Off topic, last fall we sailed a Leopard 4800 in PNW for 12 days. Very nice yacht you have.

Not to worry, we plan a "rough" itinerary for provisioning and dining out purposes. Our trip is dynamic based on weather and sea conditions. Also I highly doubt we would anchor overnight in Sandy Spit, far too exposed for our liking.


Our last night we want to moor relatively close to Soper's as we are chartering with Voyage and must return the yacht by 10 am. We do not like returning to Soper's the day before our charter ends as Voyage likes you in by 4:00 pm if you want to be on the dock. To me that is reduces our trip by one day, very anticlimactic.

The last night we prefer a quiet anchorage to enjoy the peace and beauty of the BVIs. Maybe we will switch our nights and opt for Great Harbor first and our last night stay in Diamond Cay which is one of my favorite spots. As it stands with our preliminary itinerary we will end up in JVD area last for roughly 3 nights. This could all change and we start in this area first.

BTW is there anything happening Friday nights in Great Harbor?

We moored in Little Harbor a few years ago and had a very poor experience in a restaurant there and left feeling completely ripped off. Decided after that we would not return, there are far better places to go.

There are no moorings at Sandy Spit (unless they were added since February).

There a NPT day moorings at Sandy Cay - they were added a few years ago.

Curious which of the three Little Harbour restaurants you had a problem at? We dine regularly at Sydney's and never had a problem there - always get a free dinner for the captain (me) even with a party of 6. Our crews regularly vote them as having the best BBQ ribs in the BVI.

Gotta go with Little Harbour as well. Strawberry and her friends/family have always taken care of my crews,and myself. The lobster meal is one of the best I've found. Ive tried all 3 places, usually dink over to Abe's for a beer or three, but Sydney's is my favorite. And should you chose, you can pick up a pier side spot too. Quiet and great people.

Another vote for Strawberry and the family - we love having lobster at Sydney's and they are one of the few honor bars left as well.

I like Little Harbor also however you need AC to overnight there. It's hot and buggy from now until Dec.

I have never found it buggy from November 15th on. Never an issue with needing to run the air conditioning either.

They are getting some not so faverables lately on TA.

We love eating lobster at Abe's !!! It is always perfectly cooked and you get a HUGE lobster (the whole thing !!) We never go to JVD without eating there at least twice.
