we had the express pleasure of witnessing Kate as it was forming. 55kts winds, 8 foot seas, my legs still are muscle sore. I noticed that there were 3 CATS out in that mess with me...all with sails UP...full...no reef.
I had the pleasure of meeting one of those "captains" on the way back from the islands on the ferry.
They SUBMERGED their dingy after it flipped. Then went on to describe all the rigging they broke. How the Bimini got torn off.
Closing comment, "Glad we don't own that boat" and got off with their deposit.
Then they asked where we keep our boat in charter? I will save my answer to your imaginations. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

I don't own a boat. Heck, I don't even sail. But an attitude like that makes my blood boil. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cloud.gif" alt="" />

And it still makes my blood boil! Hallucination, did you give Moorings a call with the date and boat name? Maybe get that group blacklisted......

Hey, at least they had the sails up. Seriously, many MANY charter boats simply motor everywhere, but cases like this give charter guests a bad name throughout the islands. Most are pretty cool people, we've met lots, others treat the boat like they stole it.
Saw a beautiful Beneteau 50 in the north sound sail in, dump the mail which fell out of the stackpack and onto the deck - they couldn't get into the dink fast enough to head into Leverick for Happy Hour. Sail flogged for hours. Folks ask if we charter out cat when we aren't on it...not just no - HELL no.

21 knots true wind with 29 knots apparent. Boat after boat with full sail up hard on the wind. Just to lazy to reef I guess. G

Anchoring? Fugetaboudit. When mooring balls are so easy and accessible - besides on a $10000 charter, whats $210 bucks for a week of mooring balls?
Sadly, we see a LOT of charter cats with a single line running from a bow cleat, through the pennant on the ball to the other bow cleat. I'm happy to dinghy over and have a polite chat with them, most are appreciative of the help.

So you are saying they did lose their deposit at least? That can be hefty depending on when they booked - insurance deductible is larger now then it once was. I hate people like this though - no respect for others property - probably no respect for others in general.

Moorings said if they can fix the outboard, they will get the last 250 of their 1000 buck deposit back.
If you don't want to flip your dingy in high winds...head into the wind, and shorten the painter. we had time to prepare for this storm, so we ran a bridle in addition. When I saw the size of the storm go massive, we had time to put a few inches of water in it as well.
cinched the bimini and got my swim mask on to keep the rain from hurting my eyes.

Sad for the owner but also for anyone out there in their path! I could not sail a boat but at least I know it; it is distressful that those who have such a minimal knowledge would be able to (I know: a credit card sailor). Also sad to think of the damage to any beautiful sailing vessel.
