Does anyone on the board remember that back in the 70's and 80's what was the name of the restaurant that was above Roadtown, served West Indian dinners, and had an electric sliding roof that opened up to the stars?? Or know what happened to it? Thanks!,----- the owner used to come down to town and pick us up at the boat for dinner up there. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/dine.gif" alt="" />

I heard of this place on one of my earlier visits..I believe Dr Gary Warburton on here ( Calsailor) used to go there and talk about it..both "Blue" and " Sky" pop into my old brain but, of course, its not SkyWorld..

I think it was called the Cloud Room

I was in Roadtown in the early 70's but the only place I used to go to was the Pub and then Village Cay.
The place you mention was probably out of my financial range back then and it would have probably been to boring for a person in his early 20's <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

SeeDiver is correct, it was called the Cloud Room. Run by Paul and Leona Wattly and located northeast of Road Town.

And Thanks for the 'Cloud Room' - name and articles - I particularly remember some excellent West Indian Pumpkin Soup and the ride back downhill in the dark to the boat.
The hillsides of Tortola looked like a multi colored green checkerboard back then with so many small plots of land being cultivated or pastured.

My first time at the Cloud Room was 1981 and Paul picked us up in his pickup that was rigged with some 4x4s and plywood extending out of the back of the truck so he could carry a few extra passengers. The few sitting "over the edge" of the pickup bed were really OVER THE EDGE as Paul had to make six and eight point turns to navigate up the hill to his home.restaurant and you can imagine the view those "rear enders" had as the bed overhang hung well over the cliff.. Great memories...

I remember when the Cloud Room first opened, and how exciting it was!

We took our daughter (just an infant) to visit the new place, with a pocket full of charter tips...hoping to have lunch. Drat! They were closed for lunch! No problem...we'll go to Skyworld...the competition.

Skyworld was indeed open, and we had a great visit. During the course of our lunch, Dr. Spock, who was having lunch with his wife, came over to our table and said: 'I just wanted to let you know what a beautiful little girl you have!'

We were just beaming...having received an endorsement from the great Dr. Spock! (He lived on his boat Carpace, which I believe was anchored in Trellis Bay.)

Gosh...just give me ONE more day when life was so simple in Tortola!

Speaking of encounters with Dr. Spock, on my first charter (with my father as captain) in 1969, my crewmates and I helped a man tie up his boat at the dock in Road Town (before all the landfill). He proceeded to introduce himself as "Ben Spock". We were too dumbstruck to respond intelligently. In hindsight, it was pretty cool.
