Hi Steve! We've only talked about it briefly. It'll be my big 5-0 next year, so we'll definitely be doing something. I have an open reservation on a Voyage boat that I need to use, but we also are maybe looking at doing the SVI from CYOA. Let's discuss and get something in the works

We are past due for a trip, lots of life challenges lately, Hopefully we can pull off a trip by that timeframe.
We more than need one right no but it just is not going to happen until all the ducks get lined up again.
It has been a difficult and humbling period but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
To go hang with the gang is a bigtime motivator to make this happen.

Greece with their monetary issues doesn't hold a lot of appeal for me, as much as I want to go there. Had friends there in June just before the default and they said they were glad to be out when that hit. No cash means not able to purchase supplies

The no cash only applies to locals, ATM's work fine for tourists. This is from a friend that just got back.

My friend said businesses were having trouble with ordering supplies-- food etc.
She felt really bad for the small business people they spoke to on their trip.

jp, will try to find out more about licensing and let you know if I do. My Greek BIL/niece/nephew all hold captains licenses (bareboat) for Greece, they may have some insight. We sailed the Cyclades several years back, we had an "in" with Kiriacoulis thru my BIL; the license issue was not an issue. I suspect many of the outfits have a way around it if you ask them. I'll try to find out more.
I'll say one thing; med-mooring to the quay and walking right across the street to the taverna is way different than the BVI! I kinda liked it - my wife is Greek so I had a translator available. Actually, most of the younger generation speaks English and true sailors can get buy with hand signals.
Sunny, I understand your reservations. I'll ask my BIL about how small businesses are dealing with the banking restrictions (he's an economics professor at Piraeus University) in Athens. I don't know how they do it but most seem to be staying in business. The current situation in Greece is going to affect the Greek people a lot but for outside tourist, not so much.
I know I'm coming off like a Greek cheerleader, and they could sure use the tourist dollars but my first BVI trip was right after 911. Flights were cheap, charters were discounted and we had a wonderful time. Don't believe everything you see in the news and try to take advantage of opportunities when they show up. My sig line is about taking prudent risks - still trying to get the Admiral to let us do some sailing next year when we visit her family again.
Life involves risks, take some prudent ones (NOT with the BVI ferries)!

Kim and Ward Scott (SandSailSun) sailed with a flotilla in Greece last year and are returning this year - they had a great time!

Winterstale said: Kim and Ward Scott (SandSailSun) sailed with a flotilla in Greece last year and are returning this year - they had a great time! We head out September 2nd. flying into Instanbul this time instead of Athens, exploring a bit then ferrying to the island of Kos to pick up our boot for a 2 week sail through the eastern Greek isles . We sail with an outfit out of London....seafarer . The other guy is the captain , Ward gets to be first mate for a change . http://www.seafarersailing.co.uk/advice/destinations/Greece/Dodecanese/I felt very badly for the Greek people last year but it did not really impact us at all. lots of cheap stuff to buy. we spent time on Mykinos and Santorini also and it was magical. The other couple made the arrangements as they have sailed with this company several times. not sure what the credentials needed are but I could get the contact information if needed. i am sure our captain does not have anything extra special but I could be wrong. I am more that happy to be supporting their economy again this year.....oh and we had no problem finding enough to eat.....the bread, wine olives , cheese were to die for ....what more does a girl need??

Things may improve there but last week the majority of ATM's were out of cash in Athens. Those that were open had very long lines. I would bring a substantial amount of Euros and charge as much as you can. G
