All,

We have sailed BVI and USVI a couple of times. We have a favorite captain who has sailed with us for a couple of years now. We are planning a trip in December ~ 10 days with a few days in USVI, then BVI.

He offered to sail the boat to St. Thomas to pick us up at the docks, sail USVI and then check in at Tortola to finish sailing the BVI. I do not see any issues with this as long as he handles the check in. Has anyone tried this and does anyone see any issues?

Thanks!

I pick people up at Crown Bay all the time. You will not have to check out of USVI. Your Capt. can check everyone into BVI. Everyone has to be present to check back into USVI, if you are going to go back. No worries

Yup - what sail2wind said. We did this last year when we went to sailing school. Left the dock in St. Thomas with our captain/instructor. She cleared everyone into the BVI's; we stayed on the boat w/quarantine flag up till she returned. When we returned to the USVI's, we all appeared at customs to clear back in.

If your getting in late afternoon then have your captain get a slip at Red Hook sleep aboard on the dock and you can be in St John early the next morning. Get in any earlier and a Red Hook pick up puts you in St John the first night. Red Hook has a good grocery store, lats of places to eat and some shopping. $15 a head from the airport to Red Hook in a cab.
