https://www.yahoo.com/travel/the-cheapest-family-vacation-ever-a-sailboat-in-121244160307.htmlJust the TEENSIEST bit misleading.... <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Laugh.gif" alt="" /> Clearly they didn't have a big bill from Caribbean Cellars... <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Laugh.gif" alt="" />

There's also the fact that its 4 adults paying for all 9. And the cost of flights.
I've never thought of chartering as a cheap vacation. It can be very reasonable, but there's many more cheap alternatives. Cheapest trip I ever took was probably a week in the outer banks. House rental for 3 families was about $4k for the week and we drive there so travel was cheap. Food was similar to home, so no real added cost there.

My cheapest VI sailing trip ever? Rob Swain Sailing School with a private cabin. Still cost more than an east coast beach trip with the four of us. We don't go to the east coast beaches any more!

LOL Kris - that would be true for many of us here! The other thing that cracked me up was the mention of "eight adults on a monohull". Um....no. Unless it's a 70+ footer.....no. We spend more on the boat than we did when we first started because we are much fussier now....

A cat split 4 ways is certainly cheaper than a condo in Destin, FL, for example, but the airfare is the trump card. Travel is what makes the BVI trip not so cheap.

The title is misleading, but we pay about $400 per day for the charter, so I guess it we crammed 8 people on the boat it could be $50 per person, per day. However that doesn't include the fees, provisioning, etc. Of course the air fare is the big variable...

We find that cruising costs about the same as any vacation where you have to fly to a nice place and stay in a decent hotel.

All our vacations are now compared to sailing in the BVI's. When I look back on what we spent for 4 days in Vegas last year, I cringle. I could have been on a boat in the BVI's!

Palm Springs works just fine.

We have chartered in the BVIs quite a few times, with 6-10 people on decent boats, and do a full pre and post-trip accounting of our expenses. It almost always comes out to $200 per person per day, including everything except airfare, plus or minus 10%.

haha... Isn't that about what it cost in taxi fares alone from STT to RoadHarbor per person not including the ferry or any port/departure/arrival/sitting/standing/waiting fees????
