Non-boater here. I am wondering what the numbers represent in the water areas of this map: http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/25641_BookletChart.pdf

Fathoms?? Meters?? Feet??

I've hunted around on the internet and had no luck. Got impatient and said - why not ask the TTOL crowd??

On the top of page 7 the chart states soundings in Fathoms -- having looked at the previous pages I concur.

Thanks, LocalSailor, I saw that too, and got confused by the part that said "soundings in feet on inset!" Not sure where the inset is (I guess pg. 12), but fathoms makes sense.

I asked the question because my father-in-law told me, with the great authority of an 87-year-old person who has never sailed, that the depth of ALL the waters in the Virgin Islands is only 6-10'. I knew he was dead wrong, but it did get me curious what those actual depths really are.

He's thinking of the Bahamas.

The chart title block on page 14 also indicates soundings in Fathoms. The soundings on the inset, pages 12 and 13, for Krause Lagoon are in feet as indicated on its title block.
