Today was a holiday as is tomorrow. About half the places were open while the other half was closed.

.......and that's too funny since no one seems to know if they can be open or not. We heard the police had rousted some store owners and made them close down but the reality is, this is supposed to be one of the 'businesses decide' holidays. They can choose to close and treat it as any of the other big four recognized holidays with mandatory closing of businesses not directly attached to a resort - OR - they can choose to be open and pay their staff OT for working. But technically, they could open if they wanted to and it seemed like everyone knew that but the police. Hellooooooo - can we get it together, guys? This almost sounds as bad as our government at work, doesn't it?

And to make it even a little more confusing, this only applies to the Dutch side. The French businesses were all up and running just like any other day since they've already celebrated their own Carnival, or so I was told.

Definately wouldn't have anything to do with the French side, but here is some interesting info: Queens Day

It's a Dutch holiday, not French.

It was King's Day on the 27th, while we were there. We even had a paper put in our room saying the office was closed that day. It didn't say anything else about the next few days?? Strange.

Why would you have nothing to do with French side? something we should be aware of?

I think Kim meant that the holiday (not her) and closing of business has nothing to do with the French Side since it's a Dutch holiday.

Thank you, thought this explained it as the link in my other post. It's a Dutch side holiday, not a French holiday, the French do not participate in it, so the French side is status quo on those days

Yea, and the link I posted if clicked explained the holiday for the Netherlands, which the DUTCH side participates in

And------nothing to do with the holiday but should one ever lose power on the Dutch Side drive to the French Side since they have their own electric company.

One morning we woke to no power (NO COFFEE!!!!!!!) so jumped in car went to Sarafina's in Marigot for pastries & coffee. It saved the day.
