We are a week behind you. We try to get to the parking lot 2 hours early. We have parked in the JFK Long Term Lot, which was fine - a quick train ride to terminal 4. Recently we have started using some of the independent guys. They can appear sketchy, but there are several who get good reviews on Yelp. Last time we parked with AirLot: $10 per day payable in cash up front, van ride directly to the terminal (faster/easier/warmer than the train), and a ride back to car with no waiting. C & D is another good one.

Park only at JFKs own long term lot #9
A bus (or walk) to air train will get you to your terminal in about 15 minutes

I have parked in long term a few times, a couple of times the Air Train was not working. We had to go to Federal Circle where they shuttled us to the terminal. Allow yourself plenty of time just in case the Air train is not running. Also depending on your Airline the security lines are always long and if you are flying Delta the gate in terminal 4 is a long walk from security.
