Way too much time on my hands.....
Which, as I walked the docks at Sopers today....

We know town.. as Roadtown
But, many boats.. show "Road Harbour"

Embarrassing question from a fella that has been here for so long...

Is the official name of town.. Road or RoadTown ?

...confusion being caused by Road-Harbour which suggests Road is the true name.....

any historians... before I call the college ?

Road Town is the community that surrounds Road Harbour on three sides.

A "road" is an old English term for a small harbour.

So many opinions. Who cares? The original post was from walking at Sopers.

Let's drone on a bit. "Road" is a shortened version of "Roadstead". From the Oxford Dictionary "A sheltered stretch of water near the shore in which ships can ride at anchor." http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/roadstead

What shall we discuss next? Flag etiquette? NPT Mooring Balls? (staying all day of course) Holding Tanks? The BVI version of Obamacare?(Think that would be OrlandoCare?) <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

That's true for "roadstead" but road by itself came from ride. The word "roadstead" was invented later..as a combination of "road" and "stead"....
