A co-worker and his wife are headed to a rental home on St. John by way of STT next month for a week.

He asked me about car rentals, and not knowing the answer I figured I would ask some of you all.

Should he rent on STT and take a car ferry?

Should he taxi, ferry, then rent a car on St. John?

Is any type of car acceptable? (small, underpowered, 2 dr, 2wd?)

Best place/company to rent from, or favorites?

Thanks in advance.

I would rent on STJ unless they expect use the car on STT during the trip. I would also suggest 4wd not because you need it for off road but the switch backs can get slippery in the rain. We have used Varlack and Conrad Sutton. Both were fine. I would ask whether the rental company will provide free parking in Cruz Bay when in town. Take photos of the vehicle when checking out. Don't take the top off and don't leave excessive sand or you will pay a surcharge on return.

Does anyone recall the airport code for the Charlotte Amalie seaplane base? I want to drop off my rental car there. Thanks

For newbies we recommend renting on STJ. St. John Car Rental, Mr. Piper's Jeeps (formerly Paris), Bougainvillea, Sunshine are all good rental companies. Reserve early, they may need to call multiple firms to get a reservation.

You will only be able to rent 4WD vehicles on St. John, and that is what recommend for all but seasoned visitors. As the rental management company what they recommend as some driveways are unpaved and challenging.

On St. Thomas, we prefer to rent from Amalie as they pickup/dropoff at the airport.

capndar, Avis has a presence at the seaplane base. Its great for dropping off if you're chartering out of CYOA. Avis's location code is T5S. The airport code is SPB.

Thanks to all for the suggestions/comments, exactly what I was looking for.

So, based on this board, I'd say the traveling couple should call Kevin for an airport pickup, transport to ferry, take ferry and then rent the car in St. John....assuming a walk to car rental place from St. John ferry dock.

I'm gonna pass all this info. on to coworker this Monday afternoon in the event anyone has anything else to add.
