We'll be flying back from San Juan in mid-August. Can anyone recommend a hotel in the area for one night?

No experience at all but recently there was a thread where I took it the consensus was to stay at the hotel at the airport. Not great but decent, clean and convenient they were saying.
Life involves risks, take some prudent ones (NOT with the BVI ferries)!

Ditto on airport hotel. you walk up a short flight of steps and you are in the terminal! take a cab downtown to eat. We love it for a quick night over when we are leaving in the morning.

If you don't have much time the airport hotel is probably the call. If you are arriving early and/or leaving late in the day one of the Isla Verde hotels might be something to consider as well. The El San Juan and Intercontinental are close to the airport and on the beach with nice pools and restaurants.

If you really just need a place to sleep: airport. If you have a short stay and want beach: Isla Verde . If you have time a short cab will get you to old town or head to Condado. All depends on time and if you want beach or more urban day/night.

I've stayed at the Embassy Suites(many times) next to the airport and the Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan. Either is a good choice- personally I loved Old San Juan and the Hotel El Convento was great place to stay; the cab ride was only about 10 mins longer. Just my two cents-
