I am wondering what type of security there is for valuables--cameras, but more especially, cash--at Wilderness Camps. I had---perhaps stupidly--assumed that since they are so far out in the wilderness that there would be no problem with theft, since employees who steal would no longer be employed. Maybe that is not so, however. Do we need to think about getting a money belt?? Or do the camps have some type of a main safe that we could put money and passport/etc in??

Carol,

Security varies by camp, but risk is not a concern about theft by employees, but by monkeys. Most of the employees at the camps are from the same family so it is a very tight group.

Mike--Monkeys get into the tents and steal things????? If so, how does one prevent them from doing that??

Keep the door to the tent closed and monkeys should not be a problem. We had a safe in the closet in our room where we kept wallets and passports but it probably wasn't necessary. I think it would be safe to leave cash on the bed in Botswana and it would be there when you got back. I felt safer in Botswana than just about anywhere I have been in the world.

I always wear a money belt with my cash and passport when I travel anywhere. It does not leave my body. I've never had anything that I have left behind taken in Africa.

I'm sure a monkey stole my car keys at Quito's while I was dozing off some 15 years ago, and took the car for a joy ride. I found them in the ignition the next morning.!!!

I need to go back to the BVI board and stay there ... huh? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />
