We depart tomorrow and are thinking about doing carry on luggage only. We want to bring back some local rum. Does anyone know if there is a place to purchase it passed security in SXM?

So if we are connecting in Miami it's not an option?

It's not an option because you have to go back through security in Miami.

You would have to check the bag in MIA before you go through TSA again for your connecting flight.

For me,the bottom line is that I can buy it cheaper at home than at the airport duty free shops. I checked liquo prices this Wednesday and there are no bargains at the airport.

Much cheaper at some of the shops in Philipsburg than airport shops plus easily negotiable in the Philipsburg shops.

If you choose to check luggage you can pack several bottles despite the 2 litre limit. Just declare the liquor and if questioned offer to pay the duty. You will most likely be waved through. Even if you have to pay the duty, it's not a lot of $. Based on alcohol content. A few years ago I when you could check 2 bags I brought back 7 litres. Waved through customs. Be sure you declare it. If you don't and customs finds it they will confiscate it.

I would think that suitcase would be pretty heavy, with all that liquor?

With regard to the local rum, I have to say that I have TWO unopened bottles of Ma Dou Dou in my pantry, that have been there for a while. I used to really like banana vanilla, and that seems too sweet to me these days. Perhaps I need to look for a dfiferent flavor..

We have brought home as many as 12 bottles of rum we buy from Phillipe at the Marigot Market . Never a problem. Seal the caps with duct tape and put bottles in gallon bags.

Carol- try a little poured over some good vanilla ice cream. We used to call it a Susan special after some old friends.
