The windy and wild waves of the past few days have started to settle down and I finally got into the ocean for a swim. The water seems colder to me than our previous visits but I’m not complaining one little bit. I know what you’re thinking, “Suck it up, Buttercup!” It’s been beautiful – I wouldn’t change a thing.
We spent the day people and plane watching in Maho. It’s one of our most favorite things to do on our SXM vacation so it was a great day of relaxation, swimming, and fun.
I made a reservation at Tortuga’s that night right by the ocean and it was so beautiful. The lights, the waves and the water lit up in various colors were spectacular. We were really excited about the menu – what a change from what we were able to order years ago. Tortuga’s has really stepped it up a notch during our last few visits both in décor and food.
We started with a Caribbean lobster salad. Lots of ice-cold lettuce leaves were adorned with sliced tomatoes, avocado, white onion and a huge pile of lobster chunks. A tasty honey mustard vinaigrette was dripping off every forkful…it was a great start to our meal.
For dinner, hubby had their lasagne (he really wanted Italian food) and I ordered the Poke bowl with more lobster. The presentation was so cool with its “ceramic boat”. Jasmine rice filled the bottom along with edamame, mango chunks and tomatoes. The amount of lobster on top blew me away; a huge amount of big lobster chunks that were moist and tasty. However, I goofed. It clearly stated that there was a spicy sauce on top with sesame seeds. When I see that I’m never scared because I like a little bite or kick to my food. However, this sauce was shockingly hot, so much so, that my throat was burning, and my eyes were filling up with tears. I was determined to keep going though because there was so much lobster to devour but then halfway through I gave up. I just couldn’t handle the heat! Our server apologized and said she should have had the chef put the sauce on the side but that’s okay. I enjoyed it anyway even though it was hard to eat! (Does that make sense?) LOL I’d order the dish again in a heartbeat but this time I’d have another sauce on the side.
The next day we watched Mega Yacht Asia go by our hotel. It was just built last year and is a beauty. Then we hopped into the car and drove to one of our favorite beach destinations. The sand and water were perfect with no sargassum, the music was awesome, and the drinks were frosty but unfortunately the Chef had a really bad day and I had to send my meal back. I was so turned off that I couldn’t eat anything for hours. I love this place, so please understand why I won’t say where I was – everyone is entitled to make mistakes and when it happens, we accept it and keep rollin’! So, no pictures of Day 7 but please enjoy our wonderful spicy experience at Tortugas the night before.
Don't know why a chef thinks they have to mess up a good meal with a burning hot sauce. From the description there were plenty of delightful ingredients to taste already. Doesn't do any good for the server to say it should be on the side after the fact. Hope your throat and taste buds are still intact.
I’m sorry I didn’t try either of the lobster dishes you mentioned at Tortuga Café. I went with a shrimp dish, which was a small portion that I easily finished . We’ll definitely be back, though, and I’ll have to keep that lobster salad in mind for next time!
Enjoying your reports and great food descriptions and photos. Especially love your so vibrant, excited and go with the flow attitude! Gotta love it! Keep enjoying!😍😎
