We had a great day at LaPlaya on Orient. The beach was perfect for soaking up the sun while we read or walked the beach. Wind and a choppy surf made it less desirable for me to go in the water, but David brings his boogie board and likes riding the waves. He’s also a much stronger swimmer than I am so I opted for quick dips here and there. The surf has been strong and choppy don’t worry and on Simpson Bay Beach our entire stay so I’m a bit disappointed that I haven’t been in the water more because of this.
LaPlaya uses the tractor to clean up the Sargassum. And by the way, I don’t know if this is new news, but we were told a few days ago that Coco has closed for good.
By noon, we took a break from the sun and settled in for lunch at LaPlaya. I ordered the LaPlaya bowl (Rice, raw marinated salmon and tuna, crunchy vegetables, spicy shrimp spring roll with soja and lemongrass dressing) and David went for a burger and fries. Of course, I couldn’t resist a little sushi—two pieces of salmon nigiri and a crunchy tuna roll(cooked tuna with mayo, avocado, sesame oil, cucumber topped with crispy onion and spicy mayo). Alexandra’s (hostess/manager) suggestion of a frozen Rhum Runner went down a little too quickly. Wink wink
We’ve avoided traffic this trip, either by leaving early for Orient Beach or just by luck. On the way back, we made our usual stop at the SMYC for a cocktail, conversation, and some boat watching.
David made reservations with Marco for 7:30 at Mr. Chow. When we got to the restaurant, we saw a couple from Canada, Dave and Laura that we’ve been running into quite frequently so sat at the bar for a cocktail with thembefore we dined at our table.
I chose the General Tso’s chicken, which was full of flavor and served with jasmine rice. David opted for the grilled salmon with lime sauce and smashed potatoes on the side. Options with the entrées are mashed potatoes, wasabi mashed potatoes, smashed potatoes or jasmine rice. Fried rice is also an option, but there’s a $6 up charge for that. If you’re into a little heat, give the wasabi mashed potatoes a try—they’re really flavorful. Last year, they were a bit too spicy for us, but still delicious. Both the salmon and smashed potatoes came in satisfying portions.
We decided to try the handmade beef gyoza—four per order, served with a tasty dipping sauce. The dumpling wrapper had a nice, light texture, but the ground beef filling was a bit overcooked. Still flavorful, but next time I’d choose another filling as there are several options.
Another beautiful day in paradise. Our trip is winding down, with just two full days left before we head home. We’re thinking about how to make the most of the time we have left. We didn’t get to do everything we had planned—but hopefully, there’s always next time.
I'm not a sushi fan, but that burger and fries looks wonderful to me! Sounds like another lovely day, even though you haven't been able to get into the water much.
I can't believe your trip is almost over! Thanks so much for the pics and the reports
