Planning a trip to St. John soon so I have a few questions. Stayed at Gallows Point 30 years ago and would love info from someone who has been there recently. Being 30 years older, I wonder if it is difficult to walk into the water to swim out to their floating ramp? Have bars/restaurants been built closer to Gallows Point so that it may be noisy now? Also, are there still open air taxi's available in Cruz Bay? If so, how much do they cost per person? Finally, are there many open-air restaurants in Cruz Bay? Many thanks....Marie

We lived there for four years until 2023 and visit frequently. St. John is a lot busier now. Kenny Chesney's publicity and Covid era travel bans elsewhere drove a lot of new visitors that are not typical National Park nature seekers. We still love it, but it is busier now. We haven't been to Gallows since Covid, so cannot comment on their water features. There are plenty of beaches with gentle entries on the north shore. Wharfside is where the old Pusser's was in the 1990s, now the Beach Bar and a boutique hotel above. Grande Bay condos and adjacent retail with Low Key Watersports, Drink, and Lovango Rum Bar (pizza) have been built between Gallows and Wharfside. It is a bit noisier, with live music at the Beach Bar. There is a new entertainment/lodging venue across the street from Gallows called The Saint https://www.saintstj.com/ .

Plenty of open air restaurants in Cruz Bay, Dave & Jerry's Steakhouse is really the only restaurant that is not open air. Taxi rates can be found at https://www.vinow.com/stjohn/getting_around_stj/taxis-rates/

Cheers, RickG

We stayed at Grande Bay, which is just a bit closer to the restaurants, in an upper level unit over Christmas/New Year’s and we did not find it noisy and we spent every morning and late evening on our balcony.

Also, there are tons of taxis in Cruz Bay-all open air.
