I spoke to a woman who witnessed the incident. A couple, probably in their 70s, was trying to get back to shore at Mullet Beach today. The man made it to shore. The woman was knocked down by a large, heavy wave and didn't come up. Another woman saw what happened and rushed to help. The injured woman was face down on the sand, apparently unconscious, when the wave receded. The rescuer got her to shore; the unconscious woman's face was bleeding badly from a cut lip. She also had a large bruise on her face.
She was helped to the the Kalatua Restaurant, and presumably was taken to a hospital.
Today the sea looks calm, but the waves are packing a heavy whollop.
7am it was extremely calm, by 9am still looked calm but waves were hitting. Now I am at our pool and can hear the waves crashing. I wouldn’t be in the water today. Sounds violent. Hope the swimmer is ok.
Mullett sometimes has a steep drop off from the shore line. That's when a shoreline riptide rolls over!! Have to be so aware of these things before going in the water in these areas!!!! (Photo taken on Simpson bay beach just down from BSV!!! 2013) Hope she's ok!!
We are staying at The Fourteen at Mullett Bay and can confirm that the surf was not safe for swimming yesterday. We tried to get in but the surf was much too severe. Hopefully the injured person is ok.
Update: This morning I spoke to a worker at Kalatua. He said that the woman who was injured will probably be OK. The last time he saw her, she was conscious. She was sitting down and waiting for an ambulance.
