Two Weeks in BVI - What an amazing time in the islands!
We had 5 boats this trip and 42 people joined us from Twin Cities Sailing Club, Minneapolis Sailing Center and WYC. Two crews for two weeks worked very well for me and Waypoints Yacht Charters was great when we did have issues. Anthony, the base manager is amazing!
Coco Maya was stellar as usual. The Baths have been rerouted since the last time I went ashore there a couple years ago and it’s a nice hike to the top now. We ran into Beach Battle Challenge in front of Soggy Dollar and that was quite a sight when the helicopter came over the hill to the Mission Impossible soundtrack. Sandy Spit palm trees were watered with two great friends. Bubbly pool was churning, Sweet Ice Willie was rocking and yoga at sunrise on Saba Rock was sublime. Money Bay was nice and quiet again this year. The Indians delivered fantastic snorkeling as did the caves at Norman. We visited Saba for sundown drinks and Leverick Bay for some mooring ball practice.
Winds were much stronger than my last few trips, like 10 knots higher. I’m curious if that’s due to it being two weeks later and into February. I don’t think there was more than a day or two when we had less than 20, which is great, we just reefed. With the stronger winds we managed 10.2 knots top speed on Steel Away a 53’ monohull reaching over 10 a couple times. Seas were big on the back side of Norman and Peter, 8 foot swells, but worth the journey to get to Money Bay.
The Dogs balls were being replaced which is nice. Not so nice was the Moorings 5000 captain anchoring there. Trellis balls are in much better shape than last April. Best snorkeling was Norman, best food Coco Maya, best deserted anchorage Money Bay and best sunset we had was from Pirate’s Bight. Best taxi setvice - Shorty’s Taxi.
Also checked out the Voyage 590, big sweet cat that they anchored at White Bay to show off.
If you have interest in joining our flotilla next January, reach out to me. We run 3-6 boats and a variety of cats and monohulls. Until next time, hopefully in less than a year!
