I just searched and found some posts, but after reading I think I may have it.

The reason I'm asking is that we have been eating on the Dutch side when we have eaten out, and there has been the service charge. I get that, and then we added a little more in cash to our server just because we usually tip 20%.

But the other night, we ate on the French Side at Oasis, and by the way, the food was outstanding. Well, we got the bill and there was no SC. I forgot about the difference. There was not even a place to add a tip or anything about a tip. We ended up finding our server and gave him a tip, but then I now remember about the French side and their tipping etiquette.

So, SC on the Dutch side and pay extra if you want. That is up to the individual.

On the French side, there is no SC, and most likely if it is a good place, the server etc. is paid and your fee is already added into pricing etc. So, no tipping on the French side.

Am I correct? Thanks

The French side is literally France so yes, the "tip" is included, called "servis compris". They pay them a living wage, time off, ect.

Dutch side is American style where 20% is expected.

Sometimes the French side has places where they ask for a tip, which is sort of against the rules.

We tip 5-10% on French side if having a real sit down meal.

Drinks at a bar, just the total unless have some loose change.

What erb said, with one small clarification. Service and tip are two different concepts in France. While the service is included, the tip is not. Tip, in France, is a small amount left in cash, certainly not 20% of the check. Your server may state that the tip is not included, which may be misleading to the uninformed, but is technically true.

What erb923 and GaKaye said.

I also find it best to NOT ask a server as you open yourself up to being told something that may be misleading or inaccurate as when you ask, it implies you might not know the custom.

If you enjoyed the service and the food leave an extra 10%, and the servers will be elated on both side of the island.
