lol! Its finally solved, its finally solved. Great article. Thanks for sharing. And well done, Manpot, for becoming part of the legend....and for being the closest geographically!
OK, I'm stupid, I couldn't find the story. Can someone post a better link?
Carol The link provided has a period before https. It won't work if you include the period in the link. Just highlight everything after the period and it should work!
I had an uncle who once told me as a young man he never even looked at the obituaries. As he got older, he would read them and occasionally see someone he was acquainted with, but they were always older. Then many years later most of the obituaries were people younger than him. Finally, he just started checking for his name everyday, if he didn’t see it he went on about his day.
If Buffett’s recall was accurate, it would seem to put to rest any real controversy about where he ate the cheeseburger. Coming up the Sir Francis Drake Channel and walking up a dock in Road Town during that timeframe puts him at Village Cay, nowhere close to Stanley’s in Cane Garden Bay.
"I asked him[Manpot] about Jimmy's comments that it actually occurred at the Village Cay Marina.
All I can say is that Jimmy "changed his tune". Never could figure out why Jimmy changed it but he does like to throw some mystery in. One other proof that it was "Stanley's" is on the old t-shirts that boasted "Cheesburger (misspelled) in Paradise". Only two places were officially allowed to use that...Le Select in St Barths and Stanley's, although he sued everyone else who used the moniker.
I only believe what I am told one on one..and that is it!"
One other consideration..if it was Village Cay why have they never used the fact that they are the original and used "Cheeseburger in Paradise".although Jimmy gave the OK to both Stanley's and Le Select ( the owner was a good friend an Jimmy got cheeseburgers for life as part of the deal)? I think what probably happened is that Jimmy headed up the channel at Road Town days after arriving in CGB because that was the place to get his broken bowsprit fixed. All I know is what Jimmy told me one on one..and repeated to several others.I sure he is up there delighted to know he has created an ongoing mystery surrounding the humble food!
I always laugh at this debate - why couldn't multiple places and experiences have inspired a great song? Never met the man, but think he'd find the debate (and how seriously some people take it) as being silly.
Keep Smiling!!!

Truedat, but it's fun to talk about the old days, when Jimmy was experiencing the Caribbean for the first time. I met him a couple of times. The most fun was in 1978-ish, when I was 'between boats', and hanging out at Poor Richard's (now Pussers) on Frenchman's Cay. JB pulled in to the old Fleet Indigo dock, and hopped off his boat, while his captain docked it. Back in those days, no one pulled up to this crappy dock, so I went to investigate. He came bounding down the dock, thrusting his hand out saying "Hi, I'm Jimmy!"
The second time was in 1999-ish, when he performed on the waterfront in Gustavia at the 50th anniversary of Le Select. But I was just one of a jillion fans who shook his hand and wished him well.
Another fun encounter was had by my wife, circa 1980. Our best friends were getting married (on our boat) and it was the night of the bachelor/ette parties. The guys went to the then-notorious house of ill repute in Roadtown. (Trust me, I didn't partake in the fare.) The bride and her girls went to the Pub to celebrate. It was packed, because of the BVI Regatta being in town (or some such Regatta). It was Mary's turn to buy the girls a round, and she was waiting patiently to get the bartender's attention. Jimmy walked up to the bar, and was immediately served. But he said: "This little lady was before me. Please get her whatever she'd like, and put it on my tab."
As far as the Stanley's/Village Cay controversy... here's my thoughts. JB not only had a broken bowsprit, but he was injured, as I recall. He talked about needing to visit "Dr. Robin (Tattersall)", to "fix him up". Dr. Tattersall (who delivered my daughter) was in Roadtown, at the Purple Palace. There would be no way that he would go to CGB when he needed medical attention. There would be also no way that anyone traversing the Anegada Passage would enter the BVI close to the north side of Tortola. Finally, the fact that he allowed Le Select and Stanley's to use the moniker Cheeseburger In Paradise is a reflection of his long-standing friendship with Marius and Stanley - not any indication of where he wrote the song.
