A commercial ship broke free during during Tropical Storm Ernesto and beached in Great Bay. The crew were safely removed by the "Port Authority" and the ship remains on the beach by the former Great Bay Sonesta. Hopefully they will be able to remove it as it is still upright. You can see it on the Showme Caribbean Boardwalk cam as it pans around the bay. I've attached some screen shots but they might not be to clear.

I watched that ship "float" across Great Bay yesterday on the boardwalk webcam. It will be interesting to see it removed from it's current spot.

I guess one can be thankful that that hotel is closed. I remember that huge ship that was grounded on Simpson Bay Beach by the airport a few years ago. It took a long time to get removed.

Speaking of which, is that sailboat still there, close to Mary's Boon?

Overall, sounds like SXM was pretty lucky. Power is out throughout almost all the USVI and Puerto Rico.

Carol I don't know the answer about the sailboat on the beach in Simpson Bay but I would be willing to bet that it's the same answer to the question Is "Da Party" boat still on the rocks in Beacon Hill grin

Yes, for sure Da Party boat is still there.. Or it was as of yesterday, as I saw a picture of it from yesterday.

From what I could surmise, I think the sailboat between The Horny Toad and Mary's Boon may have disintegrated.

I believe so as there was a video posted that mentioned a sailboat coming apart on Simson Bay and I could recognize some of the properties in the background. I hope to know for sure early next week.

Upon further review, the sailboat may have sustained more damage but not totally gone and the debris washing up was from something else. Hard to tell for sure at this point.

The boat is still on the beach, about 3 properties beyond Horny Toad towards Mary's Boon ,which was very crowded when I flew in today. It was turned around with Ernesto but still pretty much intact.

here is a picture of the current situation. It is not pretty. Supposedly when Doug returns to The Horny Toad, he is going to try and get it removed, good luck with that!

Somewhat of a drop-off here at Horny Toad and some large flat rocks exposed in the water but not too bad overall. I have seen it worse.

Beach at Horny Toad from my unit. BTW, very warm and humid. Currently 85 at 7:00am, it was 90 when we landed yesterday. I have been here this time of year before but as in March, it sure feels warmer. Maybe it is my age.

Yes JD the sailboat has moved. I took this picture on March 7th 2024 when the bow was pointing towards the water and now it's pointing towards the island. Also I noticed the mast and rigging and sails have been removed. That removal would have required more than one person.

Government has posted their intent to remove the ship and sell it if the owners don’t cover the costs within two weeks of removal.

Not much left to sell and the owner probably won't pay.

Thanks for sharing these photos!! It's so sad, this was once a very NICE boat, now is just fiberglass junk!! We saw hundreds of these wrecks throughout the marina's on our Rhino riders after Irma!!

I noticed this morning on the Boardwalk cam that the Island Scout is no longer beached in front of the former Sonesta Great Bay. I found it on the Marine Traffic website and it is currently at the container pier in Great Bay.
