Today was spent at La Playa’s beachfront on Orient. There was a cool breeze the entire time we were there. The ocean had a lot of rolling waves, surf was up.
When we arrived there was a significant amount of sargussam at the shoreline. A front loader with a rake apparatus in back of truck drove along the shoreline several times to remove it down the beach. The water was clear of sargassum when we arrived and stayed that way.
Orient beach was much busier with people and water activities than on Monday. We spent a good amount of time on the beach reading before heading up to the restaurant.
David ate a mahi mahi burger with fries. He said it was good. I expected the La Playa bowl to be similar to a bo bun salad but it wasn’t. The pieces of salmon sashimi were very fresh with crunchy vegetables, mango slivers and too much white rice. The spring roll was soggy. It was one large sliced open on an angle roll. The roll wasn’t crispy and the inside was filled with diced sashimi. Not sure what kind ? We shared a crispy tuna roll which was very good.
Traffic going and returning was light in the directions we were traveling from Beacon Hill to Orient roundtrip. Stopped at Yacht Club for an hour. They closed at 5:30 pm for an Annual Club Members meeting.
For dinner we opted for casual and close to home base. After reading good reviews we decided to try The Burger Bar in Maho. The restaurant has a 50s-60s themed design with booths and stools inside a nicely air conditioned restaurant. Outside overlooking the street is an elevated patio where high top aluminum tables and steel stools . We sat outside because it was pleasant with a good breeze and no humidity. It was a good spot to people/car watch as the restaurant is right after Maho Market heading toward the casino. They serve many beef burgers Ali g with a chicken and a veggie burger. I saw table cards advertising wings, and fish & chips. We went for the burgers and they didn’t disappoint. A classic burger and fries is $15. The burger is served on a big sesame bun with melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. I substituted fries for onion rings for an additional $2. David ate the blue cheese burger with fries. The blue cheese burger was $17. They were big meaty burgers with a deep beef flavor ; a very hearty portion.
The waiter explained the owner of Burger Bar also owns Hole in the Wall so if you show your receipt at Hole in the Wall you receive a 10% discount. No gratuity tip or service charge was added to the bill. There is a line clearly stating that 100% of the tip goes to the staff.
This vacation is going by quickly. Only seven more days to go.
Your reports are so good! Maybe we will bump into you guys soon.
Rit picked up Pollos Hermonos last night. It was good, but hopefully we will be out tonight. Spent our first full day, yesterday, here at BSV, so ran over to D’s for lunch. It was good.
Great to hear your positive report on this burger place. I noticed this place when we stopped at the market so I posted it here but people said it wasn't good. And since the place also has chicken we might stop next visit. I've been dying for a burger that isn't "Beyond Beef", although they are very good.
The wings as well as the fish & chips are not on the printed menu but rather in table card form on some of the tables. I overheard a customer speaking with the young waiter about sliders. Didn’t hear rest of convo so as I said not sure if they have them.
Even though the burger place was right across the street, we for no reason, made it over there to eat. But, plenty of our fellow Royal Islanders were raving about the burgers they had there!! Didn't hear one thing negative about their experiences. i did not know that it was owned by the same people that have Hole in the Wall, but now it explains why when ordering a burger at Hole in the Wall, it comes from the burger place!!! LOL The things we learn on this forum!
Staying in orient village. Last three days have been windy. Yesterday was windy and sunny, not too much surf and the beach was crowed - not even close by 2015 standards! but a bit more than we have seen in the last 2+ weeks.
Today very windy and lots of seaweed. Maybe … 50 in loungers on the beach this afternoon from Pirates north to Coco’s. Solid line of surf from Pedro's around past Mt Vernon During morning beach walk, Tintamarre disappeared in the rain as did the peaks past Mt Vernon.
Just started to rain now.
PS – nothing wrong with some gorgonzola on a burg. Our blend is brisket, blade, and short rib

A bit off topic but doesn't deserve it's own thread, two one and dones early into this trip. Not horrendous, but mediocre at best, was our experience at both The Burger Bar and Dinghy Bar & Grille. Service was pleasant and attentive at both but .......... the taste of the food left alot be be desired. Run of the mill at both. ******************
The above, is the only less than positive comment that I can remember about the Burger Bar in Maho.
About the burger place: I've been there twice. Burger is large. I made a mistake and ordered the double the first time. I was asked how I wanted it back time. I asked for medium both time and I thought they were well done instead. Whenever I go back, I'm going to ask for medium rare. I got them to go, so I didn't let them know. Service and staff are nice and efficient.
