We were just sitting on our condo's balcony enjoying some of our Super U loot, a nice Colombard/Sauvignon Blanc, when 2 sassy young donkeys went ambling down the frontage road right in front of Kontiki and Wai. Maybe they have dinner reservations at the Village tonight. wink

PS. My husband just let me know he got pictures. I'll see if I can post one. They were cute fellows. They are braying in the distance now.

I counted at least 8 donkeys between Papagayo and McCools. There's also at least a dozen goats cross Route 7 all times near the Cadisco.

We saw a literal herd of goats near the Cadisco when heading from Orient to the big Super U. They were kinda on and off the road. Apparently today was critter day.

Not much grass for them to nibble but they were kind of playing with each and goofing off. Lots of ooohs and ahhs from our little peanut gallery here.

A couple more... first time we have seen the rambunctious equines of the island so a bit of a treat to literally see the outside our backdoor.

Thanks for the pictures. I love these creatures. We had a couple when I was growing up in England. If you keep them as pets, you need to have two of them - they like to have a friend.

Is there a donkey sanctuary or anything like that on the island? Some other islands have sanctuaries to keep them safe and control the population.

There is no sanctuary. Their owner was murdered several years ago and they have been roaming ever since.

Obviously not to make light of the sad circumstance of their origin, we can add pizza thief to their list of characteristics.

A parade of donkeys showed up at Orange Fever right next to us yesterday. They are obviously very used to people giving them treats. They were kinda getting pushy and a guy thought to lure them away with, yes, a slice of pizza. It didn't work as anyone who knows equines when it comes to treats, they have an excellent memory. They came back and I don't know if they left him any pizza. I've never actually seen a donkey eat pizza. laugh

I'm sure it was funny to watch, but I don't think that was a good idea. Donkeys should not eat pizza, and they will get to be pests if people feed them.

Exactly Carol. I grew up with horses and my father in law kept donkeys as livestock guardians and they will get themselves into bad bad tummy troubles if left to their own devices. And yes while cute, they will get more and more pushy and numerous if they think they will get treats.

FatCat04 - we were at KonTiki yesterday having lunch when a donkey wandered past our table and on up the beach. There may have been two, but we only saw this one. Never seen that before! Even the bar tender said he had worked there 4 years and that was a first for him.

KitKat, yes. I believe it. We are seeing them all over. There was one munching on something directly behind Maison Mere near the pétanque pitch last night. We did not approach it and it seemed perfectly calm just munching away. The island is pretty lush with greenry and even grass in places but I am guessing the easy pickings from tourists and maybe even trash might be bringing them even closer in. I am sure island donkeys have tougher stomachs than our quarter horses did but I still can't believe a lot of the stuff they might be getting is good for them.
