Looking to book our July BVI Charter and I see the AA Flights from the New York Area through Miami have a 45 minute connection time. Is that even doable? What happens if we miss the connection due to a delay in the NYC-MIA leg? Are there other options or would we be stuck there until the next day?

A few weeks ago, we flew TPA-MIA and MIA-STT with a 45 minute connection. We paid extra to have seats close to the front of the Tampa flight so that we could deplane quicker. Originally, both our arrival and departure were in Terminal D, so no problem. At the last minute, our departure was changed to Terminal F. It was a brisk walk and we barely made it.

I would not be happy with a 45 min connection time in Miami. If the gates are close and your flight is on time its doable..but any hiccup and your flight is gone.I like 90 mins to 2 hours for a Mia connection..panic is not a good way to start a vacation.

Also.....the sky tram is not working.......No dates as to when it will be running. We do the MCO-MIA-AXA route often and we overnight in Miami. Heading to Virgin Gorda next week (via EIS) and will overnight in Miami to avoid the tight connection. We highly recommend going to MIA the night prior.

If you are in the NYC area why not just take a nonstop from JFK? Why mess with connections and possible delays or overnights?
We fly Delta nonstop right into STT. You get in a little after noon with plenty of time for ferries. It's such an easy route.

I'm guessing he wants to fly into Beef Island.

We just did the EIS-MIA flight and it was amazing. Our taxi driver told us it is the most reliable flight the airport has. As others have noted the Sky Tram is down so you will definitely get your exercise going from gate to gate.

I will also say that the ferry ride to and from St. Thomas has also improved a lot. Our last few ferry rides have been comfortable and on time. This last one (from STT to Road Town) I was actually cold because Road Town Fast ferry has the air conditioning turned up so high in the enclosed cabin but the ride was smooth even in some semi-heavy seas.

We just were on it too... Currently on the MIA SEA leg.

Flight was great! The engine spin up and dragstrip launch really cracked me up!

NOTE:

Just came in through MIA last night - the tram for the D concourse is still down and the advertised trolley service (the carts) is nowhere to be found when you need one.

ecm--that's too bad. Miami is difficult to deal with, even when the tram is working.

We pre-booked a trolley between the gates because of a relatively short connection time. Instead they sent wheelchairs, both in Miami and Tortola! We politely declined those. There are dozens of trolleys in the Miami airport, all sitting idle in the concourse.

Our return this year was through Miami. From D concourse to E concourse with only a 40 minute layover. And yep, no tram. The porter put my wife in a chair along with our carry on bags and we literally jogged to the gate. We got there just as boarding started. I would not recommend this at all.

Outbound our flight from DCA departed 45 minutes late. We had about an hour layover in MIA. They made up some of the time in the air but we ended up running/walking from D-1 to D-60. We were both exhausted!

Just returned from EIS to MIA to TPA. EIS ground team kept saying the flight would be fine and an AA rep would greet us when we deplaned in MIA. (The incoming flight was delayed due to a mechanical issue.) Well-I told them noone would help. They called a manager and they told me "not to worry." I said that I do this connection via AXA often. Well-the flight was about two hours delayed and no assistance in MIA. Went through immigration and asked where the service desk was located. We were sent outside the secure area. Thankfully I had checked all my options prior to landing (MCO, TPA, GNV). The agent said no flights Wednesday night! We could go Thursday at 5pm to TPA. I asked for GNV (closer to my home.) They did assist! So-just wanted to give the heads up to be prepared when going through any connection especially during the holiday season.

i just booked tampa to stt at the end of April . There were two flights that I would have rather had but only had the 45 min layover . . . they also had a flight with a 2.5 hour layover I chose that and now I am glad I did after reading this. Ridiculous to even offer this flight one thing goes wrong and it's over. For gosh sake it takes about 30 minutes just to get off a plan nowadays.
