And I bet he is not the only one, he just got caught.
I wonder if they have looked into any of the airport dealings closely?

Corruption in government is par for the course on SXM. The Dutch government that funds almost everything seems helpless to make much change. Amazing how tolerant they are. Theo is far from the only person that took advantage of his name and former political status. A lot more should have will go to jail.

Theo following the footsteps of his grandfather, Dr. Claude Wathey.

If you are still vacationing in Sxm is because there was a guy that had a vision about a place the size of a spit in the ocean., Mr. C.W... When I went to University of Political Science the first thing they thaught us was that "there is no democracy without corruption, the degree of corruption marks the degree of democracy". I do not think that we belong to countries with a clean sheet about corruption.

enzo--can't say that I have ever heard that statement about democracy and corruption and I do not agree with it.
And Sanfilip--It's Claude WATHEY.
Will let this go a little longer, but probably won't be long before it will be closed.

Enzo - where is the University of Political Science? A google search didn't turn up a school with that name?

Carol--I do not agree with that statement either. It sounds a lot like other garbage many universities are teaching our kids these days.

I'm not sure, but can he appeal the conviction? And what happens if he does? Because in the US, according to Oberheiden P.C.'s site, a law firm, a person who appeals their conviction can get the case overturned and be free. Is that the case here?

He already appealed and he decided to stop the further hassle . From the five , he will only do about 3 years.

Democracy has the ability to be the least corruption free and depends upon moral standard, laws, investigation, and enforcement of laws. A lot more corruption seems to be tolerated, expected and goes unpunished. Everyone seems likely/expected to cash in during/after public/military office. Some of the corruption is sophisticated and systemic ala revolving door. Once the first official goes unpunished, 100 more follow and point to the precedence.
SXM is no worse than USA, we just expect them to be Mayberry like.
Singapore is the least corrupt place I have found. USA used to be.

Mercy. Well, since this is an old story which was resurrected for some reason, and there is nothing new on it, will end this one here.
