Wendy--that story is over two years old, and seems to say that the state does not even have that power.

Tim--I know your post is in jest, but not many people care that much about the golf course. The issue is selling Mullet Bay beach to the highest bidder, who will build 20 story buildings on every inch of it. Mullet is the last beach left on the Dutch side that locals and tourists alike can use freely.

@Carol_Hill - are you certain that Mullet is the last open beach on the Dutch side? What about Kim Sha - that remains open and freely available.

Sounded like the local St. Maarten government is concerned that the Netherlands (European country) have there eye on the Mullet Bay property and will use the loans they have made to St. Maarten as a means to take/buy the property. That IS prime real estate so it's an interesting theory. Not sure there is merit to it but I hope at least something is done to repair the road that winds through the property.

The Beach it self is public property. Don't see how that could be changed.

Zanshin--to me, I have zero desire to go in the water at Kim Sha, due to contamination. As to whether it is open, yeah, maybe, although restaurants are built right there, almost to the water line.

Scuba--really? Depends on how much money there is in it for someone.

The argument presented makes no sense. Why would discussion at conference on Cuba on economic opportunities in Cuba for the Dutch mean they are interested in Mullet? It just anti colonial posturing.

No, it makes sense. SXM borrows $$ from Holland and do not pay back. So they owe. Dutch take Mullet Bay as collateral, golf course and all, and they have a set up like Varedero Beach. Sol Melia and all those hospitality companies have a bigger footprint in Caribbean. Makes sense to me. Seems the commissioners are finding out that their lifestyle costs! Cheers irina Why do they keep voting the same crooks in?

You'll like this one. "Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House.
One is from Chicago, another is from Tennessee, and the third is from Minnesota.
All three go with a White House official to examine the fence.
The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil.
"Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."
The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says,
"I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $300 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."
The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700."
The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"
The Chicago contractor whispers back, "$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence."
"Done!" replies the government official. And that, my friends, is how our government works."

Hey what’s going to happen is going to happen. We can complain and gnash our teeth but at the end of the day most of us are just tourists. Just on the island for a few weeks out of the year. People that have made the commitment to move to SXM have earned the right to complain but even they have little power over what happens there. The island has changed a whole lot since I first came in 1982. Some changes for the better. Some for the worse. Still can’t wait to get back every trip.

ROTFLMAO!!!! Our county courses here in Westchester county NY are a THOUSAND time more lush than that cow pasture!!! I can't believe guys/gal bring their sticks just to walk around want-a-be course??? Fix the road?? AHH who doesn't love zigzagging around all the potholes??? SMH!!! And having people right on your bumper blowing their horns until the veins explode in their necks because you are driving so slow so to avoid tearing up your rental!!!
Sand Gravity, got to love it!

We golfed it yesterday, greener than usual, I find it a nice compliment to beach days while here. We were the only folks on the course.

If the Dutch have rights to the property as Collateral and its in default then seems like they could auction it off to a real developer that would benefit the Island. Lot of Ifs. The SXM government keeps inflation the amount of money its owned so they can borrow more money so lots and lots of bogus amounts being sent out to individuals and SXM businesses. Another way the gov scams the Dutch and banks. Bogus accounts receivables limited real assets. Their aint no gold in these hills so hopefully the gov does not keep messing up its only money maker ....Tourist.

Not sure what you're trying to say as most of your sentences make no sense and hard to follow a thought.
