Thanks for that link. It must have been quite the fire at some point. It looks like the railing on the unit where the fire started has been warped a bit from the heat of the flames. I'm glad to hear that there doesn't appear to be any casualties.

I guess that's a grill. Is it allowed to have grills on balconies at SBR?

Probably not any more after that. If they weren't I imagine the occupants will be held liable for the damages.

No grills allowed on the balconies. Two years ago we had a similar incident with a family of questionable brain activity grill two floors below us. The smoke filled the units above but definitely not as bad as this event..the grill did not burst into flames but it was still overwhelming. Security had the group put an end to the grilling. It was a charcoal grill bought on the Island

OK, thanks boucharda. I kind of figured it was not allowed. No idea how this could have happened unless someone threw gasoline on it??

Purely speculating but that smoke doesn’t look like the typical charcoal briquette smoke we get when cooking dinner when camping. But if someone threw a can of charcoal lighter fluid on it…….. but no one would be that stupid. Would they?

Respectfully,

pat

I does look like the billowing black smoke is coming from inside the condo and flowing past the burning object. Floors are hard ceramic tile and are non-flammable so I can't figure how the fire/smoke got to that point even with the help of an accellerant . Maybe tomorrow will bring an explanation

Update

*SXM-News

"Firefighting operations were swiftly launched, with the Sint Maarten Fire Departments. Their efforts were successful in containing and ultimately extinguishing the blaze. Subsequently, a joint investigative team consisting of the forensic department of KPSM and fire personnel commenced an examination of the incident to determine the cause of the fire.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest that the fire was not a result of premeditated or intentional actions. Instead, the evidence points towards an electrical anomaly as the potential cause of the fire."

Well, actually, that is good news, I guess. Good news, that someone was not stupid enough to have caused the fire deliberately, but kind of scary that SBR has such faulty wiring. Anyone know the last time that building was renovated?

I would have thought the electical system would have been inspected and our replaced after Irma. Some resorts just did band aid repairs where others had to pretty much start from scratch with electrical and plumbing.

Brian--PRE Irma or POST? I was thinking that SBR didn't have as much damage as other places from Irma, but it could be I don't remember correctly.

I think her point is that NOPLACE in SXM is inspected, including your beloved Flamingo.

Hard to say if they were or weren't.
