Sad that this world appears to have become so lawless. Getting so you can't turn on or read the news that there isn't a shooting somewhere. Troubled times.

Although the situation is bad, we need to keep in mind that with today's instant news we see/read/hear much more about events that happen and in near-real-time.

I don't think that hearing about these events a couple of days later would make them any more acceptable

Does this parade start in the middle of the night? Odd that the shootings were at 5:30 AM.

No idea but from having been to Carnivale on the Dutch side before, a parade/jump-up can happen about any time and any place. It was referred to as "The Jouvert Morning parade" so perhaps it started very early.

No excuses. Just don’t read the paper or watch TV in the USA if you can’t handle crime. It’s everywhere and SXM is much much better than many tourist destinations. Never felt unsafe on SXM after 20 years.

Jouvert is a contraction of jour ouvert or the start of the day. On some other islands, the parade can start as early as 2:00 a.m. and is usually held on the Monday before Ash Wednesday.
