Spirit (yes, I should have known better) just emailed me a cancellation notice for our round trip 2/11-2/18 from BWI. It looks like the flight down may still exist. Getting back is the problem. Anyone had any experience with taking a hop to San Juan and then flying out from there?

Years ago we used to do the San Juan connection to and from SXM with AA when they had that. Was never a problem for us then and can't imagine it would be now.

Wow, that's pretty short notice. Sorry about that.
Years ago, SJU connections were common. These days, only available with small airlines. Do you have a particular route, airline you are looking at?

Spirit apparently still has flights running from SJU to BWI, so considering a WinAir or Air Antilles hop to SJU, spend the night and fly on Sunday.

American Eagle had a hub at SJU but that has been a long time ago. I connected a time or two via SJU.

These days, Winair and Silver may be the only commercial carriers between SXM and SJU. I haven’t checked that route in a long time.

jsbell--I know this is probably a stupid question, but did you try to call Spirit on the phone, to see if they would re-route you? Historically they are almost impossible to get through to on the phone, but I might try.

Thank you everyone for your replies. We now have a somewhat awkward workaround that will get us down and back without a San Juan layover. Turned out the problem was that Spirit had deleted our connecting flight from FLL to BWI on the return leg from their schedule and, because of that, cancelled our whole trip. Since Spirit does not do multi-city reservations, we used the cancelled flight credit to book the BWI to SXM leg as a one way trip; added a second one way return on Spirit from SXM to FLL; and, finally, a third one way ticket on JetBlue from FLL to DCA. This required about four hours on the computer and a call to the credit card company which was convinced that buying six one way tickets was evidence of fraud. The kids have been drafted to do the drop off in Baltimore and pick up in Alexandria, so, with fingers crossed, we will be on our way in nine days.
