Daily Herald link

Sounds like several new improvements will be made, whenever it is finally done.

The fact that it has taken this long to make the airport functional again is just incredible. Incredibly sad.

I wonder about the addition of showers. Not sure how that works in airports in other places. They provide towels or something?? It doesn't say anything about the Souliga Lounge, but I surely hope that comes back. It would make sense if they integrated showers into that somehow.

I love how they keep saying 2014 instead of 2024.

Yeah, I saw that. Pretty funny, considering the hurricane was 2017...

Everybody will be thrilled to finally get this airport fully opened again. On Opening day all of the politicians etc that delayed delayed delayed years and years and years to finish this critical need for sxm economic recovery no doubt will be high-fiving each other, congratulating each other on a job well done. Ha. Some people just gonna say pure incompetence. Ridiculous

These people are looking at this through rose colored glasses. These photos are the same ones as last year!!I've never seen a construction job that has taken this long!! Talk about milking the cow!!! Is it me? Am I the only one that gets the jitters walking up that makeshift plankway to the food court level???? I don't trust any of their skill set level to build anything!! 2014? 2024? Try 2048!!!

We plan to visit the island next year. Our first time since Hurricane Irma. I know this is a stupid question, but I have to ask. Is the airport functioning normally? Is it safe for large jet aircraft? Should we postpone our visit another year or two??? Thanks!

The usual aircraft still arrive and depart, it is the interior that is most impacted and the experience with check-in, boarding, etc. It is functioning enough that I would not cancel a trip. I have one in March and just know I will have to deal with some inconveniences upon arrival and departure.

We have been six times since Irma. The first few trips the airport was in tents. It's come a long way since then, but is still not what it was before Irma. That said, from a safety perspective, everything is operating as it needs to. No reason to delay your visit.

280z--the airport is perfectly safe. To ME, the major inconvenience is that there are no operating jetways. To those without mobility issues, that is not a big deal. Go! Enjoy!

The actual construction didn't start until they eliminated the sticky fingers from the project which was less than a year ago.

Personally, I seriously doubt all the "sticky fingers" have been eliminated as the same person is still in charge.
