Allianz is how it is spelled, I believe, and it is used by several airlines. I have purchased it several times through various airlines, but never had to use it, fortunately. The problem that I have with it is that you can't customize the coverage. Lately, we have just been purchasing insurance through Insure My Trip, which you can fully customize.

We buy an annual policy thru Allianz, have for several years. You don't have to log your trips but it is only good for the amount of your annual coverage. Some years we purchase 15,000 and some years 10,000, depending on trips and associated expenses. We have had to file a claim and they have always come thru. Last year it was a snow issue in Philly, they covered everything but second covid test. One year it was a knee surgery issue and Doc said no travel, we were booked on Bare N sail and 32 days later a check. Would highly recommend them for annual plan.

The one I bought was through Jet Blue but it’s not an annual policy it’s for the time when I’m there on vacation

We had an unfortunate hospital stay in SXM last fall which totaled about $8,000. The Allianz plan that you purchase when you book your flight through JB covered all but the $50 deductible. It took just over a month to get it. We primarily buy it to get back to the states if there ever was a serious problem and fortunately have never had to use that coverage.

Carol, you can customize the amount of you Allianz policy, and adjust the dates if you need to.

Georgia--I knew you could customize dates with Allianz, but I never knew you could customize the coverage amounts. I was primarily concerned with the medical evac coverage, which seemed to be very low, at like $30,000, which isn't sufficient. I prefer booking through Insure My Trip, to be able to customize everything and compare several policies, side by side.

One has to be very careful with this kind of insurance. For example, many policies might cover the expense of getting the insured to a more comprehensive hospital back in the US, but not necessarily to one back home--that is, they will cover you only to the nearest facility or their choice of one. Other policies might pay your fare for a flight home, but not cover the expense for any medical personnel required to accompany you--even if medically necessary. They might cover the cost of a seat on a commercial flight, but not for an air ambulance.

Always ask for a copy of the fine print and do not hesitate to ask questions. And be sure to get the answers in writing!

Yes, good point. If you are evacuated from SXM, closest Hospital might be in Miami. If you live in California or Washington, and might not be a Hospital in Network for your personal Insurance. It could cost you a small fortune to be transferred (once stable) to one in your home state. Try to make sure you will be taken to the Hospital of your choice, especially one in your Insurance network.

That is an important point, yes. Fortunately, for us, Miami is a decent fit for us. It really depends on the terms of the policy, which can be very different. That's why I like to use Insure My Trip, can look at very specific things like that and compare different policies.

As always, if you use the link to Insure my Trip here on TTOL, your cost is the same, and TTOL gets a small commission.
