It seems this question comes up more and more here and on the BVI Facebook groups. Someone with the expertise ought to set up a calendar where people can post water taxi reservations and how many more people can be accommodated.
My wife and I going from the BVI to St. Thomas on May 23 but we already have ferry reservations. I wonder if we can cancel? Even if we can, we'd need more than the 4 of us and a dog to make it affordable.

Water Taxi from STT to Road Town runs between $360 and $400 round trip per person, planned in advance. This includes all taxes and fees, which are significant. It appears to me that the cost increases as you get closer to your travel date. There are about 6-8 providers, but all are within this price range.

We go with Chill Out Charters when we have our whole crew with us. We meet them in Red Hook. The cost is $900 for 6 people one way and then $150 per person after that. This is the all in cost which includes luggage, all clearance fees and taxes. It does not include tip. So, once you get to 6 people it makes it worth it in my opinion. They will pick you up in Charlotte Amalie for an additional fee but we have found that it works better for us to do pick up/drop off in Red Hook as it is closer to our place.

It is important to compare to costs of door to door with Ferry/ land taxis. I have found water taxi going in is much more value. The Ferry coming back is generally better than going into BVI (Customs in USVI more predictable). Also I have often not had a group (just 1-2 people traveling back with me) and thus water taxi not a good option. I do think a community availability calendar would be great.

Just talked to Chill Out. They are totally booked for May 23rd but put us on the waitlist. Looks like we might have to ferry.

I am aware that there are other services and if I really needed the water taxi (as in had 6 people waiting) I would call others but this is just a "hope" that we could water taxi instead of ferry since there are only 2 of us.
