We are going to be sailing in the USVI in May and although we have spent a ton of time sailing around St. John and St. Thomas we haven't explored St. Croix and would like to do so. Any recommendations, things we must do?

BaardJ on this forum wrote a fantastic trip report several years ago that contained great details on St Croix, and what there is to do there. Link to the report here:

We sailed down there a couple years ago. Fantastic! Spent a couple nights in Christiansted and 3 or 4 nights at Buck Island.

Did you have to get a permit to anchor at Buck Island?

We went down to St. Croix last June and got a Buck Island permit and went for an afternoon. It is a nice spot. There was no overnight anchorage allowed I think due to covid issues. This may have changed

The sail down and back from the south side of St. John is great. I recall reading somewhere that D. Street rated this as two of the 5 best sails in the Caribbean. Pretty much beam reach each way. We had an Island Packet 465 with one reef bouncing off 9 knots on the way down with a bit of a following sea. For me its worth the trip just for the sailing. Keep an eye out for the fish pots around the south drop.

Thanks tothedogs! If Don Street rates it that high it is a must do! He was our boat neighbor where I lived in Grenada. My parents were friends with him and I played with his kids.
