Okey Dokey………….

Captain Morgan’s search for Raspberry Sauce……

Day 8
MORE chocolate croissants at Zee’s & off to Orient. Got at Baywatch by 10:00 am, NOBODY was there – I mean on the beach……and yes it is definitely OK and permissible to have Caribes for breakfast. After all, Jack has a T-shirt hanging in Peg Leg that says so – “ Beer its not JUST for breakfast anymore”! Had to have that one for the hubby!
This would be the day we would find out firsthand what exactly you folks have meant by a sandblasting day at Orient, and would also explain the steady line of cars going up the hill instead of down to the beach…………..
However, that just meant more of Orient for US, and we loved it!
Sand is a great exfoliate anyway.

STUPID TOURIST MOMENT #2:
I had been wondering and wondering where was the SIGN , I wanted a picture, everything, we had also been wondering why Orient beach resort was so far away from Baywatch, and why they would all walk so far ………So I’m swimming, right in front of Baywatch, and yes you guessed it , just happened to look to my LEFT, and whadda ya know ! The SIGN , the RESORT……..Man I am SO GLAD I didn’t ask anyone !!

Upon Adrian’s advice I chose the Chicken Parmigan plate for lunch, because he only eats chicken and fish ya know, and of course Andy had to order the Grouper burger ( I think the only time he ate beef was at Peg Leg ! ) Both were REALLY good, but be WARNED……….the food there is served in HUGE portions…… we so could have shared…then we woulda had more room for the Caribes……………….

Did you know that you can drink eight Caribes in an hour and a half and still be upright??

Cheryl however was not very happy with me as I STUPIDLY told her we forgot our license plate. She told us we were on her S**T list, and walked off ………….Guess we will have to go back to clear our good names….BUMMER!

Never did get a chance to meet the famous Andy……..I wanted an Andy & Andy picture …………

We stayed till the eight Caribes wore off for sure, then drove through Grand Case.

I have been constantly amazed at the familiarity I feel seeing the architecture here. It is SO like the French Quarter, but had been missing the lovely wrought iron scroll work on the balconies………….till now that is!
Besides the beaches , it is the beautiful old buildings that I love the most. The tall shutters on doors and windows, the worn wood and peeling paint. Next time I will bring a video camera FOR SURE!!

We then went off to try to find Plum Bay and saw this lady standing in the road ( a dirt road) in front of her closed villa gate talking on her cell. It was kinda weird because there is nothing in this area but villas, and you just don’t see people on the road………..we couldn’t find the beach so turned around and there she is by now walking on the road- high heels & all dressed up – we asked her if she needed a ride , and she spoke mostly only French, but said she was going to Sandy Ground! Were like No, you’re not walking to Sandy ground, so she finally got in, and its really only about a 10 minute drive, but to WALK there?? OMG!! What do you think 2, 3 hours?? In heels?? SHEESH!
Her car had broken down and she was going to her husbands restaurant, which of course I have forgotten the name of, but maybe one of you will know it. It was right across from Marios Bistro , down this little alley?? Anyway she wanted us to come in for a drink to thank us , but we were really tired and just said “no problem mon” ……..J/K……and we went home. So our good deed had been done for two weeks and now we didn’t have to be nice anymore! JUST KIDDING!!

Day 9
This was a very exciting day for us as it was the MAIDS DAY OFF !
You must understand, we had no idea that the maid would actually be at the villa for 3-4 hours!! We felt so uncomfortable, not by any fault of hers at all Janelle was wonderful, that we would make sure we were up and out of the house by 9.
We went for breakfast at the Sugarcane café ( this would be me struggling to remember where this is by…..La Montmare??..some Casino I think) Anyway, we had two breakfasts, coffee and of course a diet coke, all for 15.50. I thought it was a good value, and a good meal, but nothing exceptional……….definitely take my whole family there if traveling with the kids……

We went to a grocery store..The Daily Something…and saw this black truck parked outside with Buccaneer Beach Bar on the side of it. The whole time in the store I’m like- is that HIM is that him?? Then there was this guy who looked really familiar…but there was no way I was gonna go up and say- hey are you this guy named Neil- plus I knew the TTOL party was tomorrow and I would find out then.

Spent a few stops trying to buy a phone card as we called home way more than I wanted to, because everytime we called Andy would get a little down. You would have thought it would have been me, but NAH………..however when they told me how my PUPPIES had grown …….okay well that got to me! I stayed home for 15 years with my kids before going back to work, I figure I deserved two weeks of guilt free living !!
By the way, most gas stations sell UTS cards, that is if its Sunday and you cant get a hold of Sharon! Again the thing with Michael, he was probably just having a bad day, and it would not stop me from using Sharon for phone service again!

Back to villa for further exploration into the Captain and strawberry sauce, okay fine-, Daiquiris if you cant speak islandese! After three pitchers -SHARED –and a nap- okay this is vacation, being able to take a nap whenever you want to- we went off to dinner.

Upon Deepti’s recommendation, we tried the Boathouse. Andy had the blackened Grouper and I had the shrimp Scampi, both very good. That is a very colorful, comfortable place to enjoy dinner, especially on the porch over the water.
On the way home we drove through Maho, and WOW was it hopping for a Sunday!
Such a contrast, people in evening dresses & suits, then shorts & tanks !I woulda been in the shorts !

Day 10
Into the double digits now………….getting a little sad……..panicking about what we still want to do……..
Went to Baie Rouge for snorkeling. This is a lovely beach and just very nice, but it has been re-named by us and is now called Jelly Fish bay. If I had a dime for each one that tried to kill me…well…….. I could go back sooner ! HA !

I knew that the villa Point Des Fluers was on Baie rouge and sure enough right by “Davids Hole” there it was ….it looked even more stunning in person than in any picture, and there were two couples on the overlook . We snorkeled to the little beach by the stairway and sat down, as this was as close as we were gonna get ! Really its beautiful and the view from there must be amazing! Someday…………..

Andy got dinner at Chez Raymond on the beach, he had ribs & I had chicken. Both very good , but I didn’t like the sides there at all, however I had never had grilled mango, man oh MAN !Now that is good stuff!

Hung around the villa then got ready for the PAHTY ( right Contessa??).

STUPID TOURIST MOMENT #3
All week long we had seen Neil’s place on the way to Marigot for choc, croissants, so we knew it would only be about a 5 minute drive tops.
Ahem.
So, we go there, and notice we are the first ones, which is odd because we were running late, and walk up towards the restaurant to the sounds of certain construction devices…..hmmmmmmmm……..

Okay, so back to the car and I dunno pull out the DIRECTIONS from “wifeofrmart2”
Yeah so totally on the other side of the island………………blah blah blah……..so we were fashionably late !
Who knew there would be two buccaneer places?? Should have had a clue, with the whole Mr/MRS B’S thingy going on, but we had gone to Les Boucanners, instead of Buccaneers Beach bar…………also ther are a lot of “AUBERGE” places too aren’t there??

We finally get there and we see DEEPTI!!! Really so nice to know someone!
And then, there is the familiar guy from the grocery store ! It was Neil, and I still didn’t get to meet him ! We met SO many nice people there, it was a good time.I got a lot of good info from people, and had a lot of laughs . Let’s see……..these are just the folks I remember: Oakley, Thighmaster, Maryanne & Bob(?), Larry & Gretchen( we are tough old broads right Gretchen!!), Tom & his wife the northen new Yorkers, Sam & Raymond from Kays (thanks for the drink!), wife of Rmart( I never did meet Rmart )…and that’s all I could remember, and ther is a reason why…….

Poor Oakley was viciously attacked by a roving wildcat who mistakenly took his thigh for a dog?? and he was left with four puncture wounds! Keep us informed how the rabies shots are going…………

I had been telling the folks (OKAY practically bragging) about how surprised I was at the amount of beer /rum I can consume and not feel really “affected” ( don’t worry I was never driving), and that it must be because you sweat the stuff out in the heat……….Right.
Well, I kinda blew that theory outta the water and will now have to replace heat with sun, as apparently that tactic only works during the DAY.
My whole body hurt the next morning!

We had dinner at Turtle Pier another Deepti recommendation, but especially for the Lobster in Champagne sauce…it was FANTASTIC!!Andy had -what else –GROUPER, pan fried and spicy . Andy liked his fished a lot, but liked my lobster better, and yes I shared !

Day 11
Happy Birthday to Andy!!
Okay so its his birthday and he gets to pick whatever he wants to do today, but I still need my choc croissant fix! Went to Zee Best in SIMPSON BAY!! Who knew till told??
I ordered scrambled eggs, because I don’t like of egg slime, and how hard is it to not get egg slime when you scramble them ??Andy had it too , but he doesn’t mind egg slime. Well , there was egg slime. Andy liked his , so I gave him mine. Wise decision apparently.

Off to find Baie Long, and we did. It’s a very nice beach, but I had a very hard time getting out of the water there as well, but Andy would come and help me out. Over by the Hotel( La Samana?) the water looked very calm, and they had chairs there.

Yes, someone could by me a villa on that beach and that would be just fine !

Went back to the villa after a wwhile and then became “stuck “ there as our gate clickers stopped working! I wasn’t very happy, but called Carol at Carimo, and she soothed my ruffled feathers and sent someone up right away. It was just like the straw that broke the camels back.I had had enough of dirty pools, broken appliances, repair men, gardeners…UGH!!! We felt that all this shoulda been checked and been in working order before we got there, but ya know SH** HAPPENS!!
I was very thankful that the man came right away, and he was very nice.
Now to find Plum Baie. We were so frustrated not being able to find this , looking on this map and that map, asking folks for directions. STUPID TOURISTS!!
So we are driving on the road and there is where the beach SHOULD be , but then there is a PRIVATE PROPERTY sign on the fence, so no, that cant be it !! Must have gone back and forth 5 times before we saw the WALKWAY!!!!! The sign on the fence is private property, which must scare a lot of people away which is a good thing !
So at last we have found OUR BEACH!!!!!!!!

Not very many people, CALM waves & beautiful scenery, no chairs or lolo’s here, Private villas line the beach with massive high fences………….there were clothed, topless, and nude sunbathers here as well.
I could get out of the water all by myself…like the big girls do !! WOO HOO!
Andy saw the owners (or guests?) of a LARGE villa many times come in & out to play on the beach……………upon returning home, we found out that this is the villa Anna Nicole stayed at …..not even gonna try to remember how to spell it….but OMG its like from a movie!

Stayed till almost sunset, then Andy wanted steak for his birthday dinner, so off to Peg Leg.
Well, a kind of unfortunate thing happened here. We walked up to the door, and were warmly greeted by a gal who we thought was the hostess. WRONG!! She was another waitress and we didn’t realize till it was too late that we had not been seated in Shawn’s section. I really feel like we had offended him, which was the LAST thing we ever intended- he was so wonderful to us the week before……… it was just an unknowing error on our part, and we are truly sorry!! The gal was a fine waitress, but nowhere near that of Shawn. We saw Neil come into the bar, and we met him finally, great guy too and we hope your dog is doing better!, and also Tom and his wife ( they had been eating outside and then came the cloudburst!).

We ordered coconut shrimp for an appetizer, when Andy started looking funny to me. I just knew something was wrong but he wouldn’t say anything. The shrimp were really good, and we waited for our meal to come. By this time he was tuning a muted shade of grey in the face, and I asked him if he wanted to leave, no he was FINE ! Why are guys always FINE????
Dinner came & it was wonderful , Andy had the T-bone, I went out on a limb and had the filet! Such a chicken! He could barely finish and said we needed to go.
It was ATTACK OF THE SLIMY EGGS!!!!!!!!

At the TTOL party the night before he had arranged with Oakley to go on a fishing trip the next morning, so we were trying to call him , but we still couldn’t figure out how to call from one side to another…………any way by this time he was definitely not well!
We are really sorry Oakley, there was no way he coulda been on the water for sure!

After a few hours of sleeping , he felt better and by the next morning better still.
Shawn, if you read this…truly we didn’t mean to diss you!

Day 12
Went to Phillipsburg again, and found the Liz Claiborne store.
DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!
Poor Andy , misses out on a fishing trip, then has to go SHOPPING??
What a world………..

Also found the Rima store , and saw everything I had gotten from the vendors here at a fraction of the price. Its okay though, I felt good about buying from the vendors. In fact, everytime they approached me , I would think to myself “ I have a great job!” , even though I have a boss who is possibly psychotic……….

Bought my 17 year old bags of Gucci, Louis Vitton, and Coach, all knockoffs of course, but really hard to tell! She will be a senior next year and needs “bag power” !

On the way home we tried to go to the Lido Lolo, but went too early so decided on Churches chicken instead. FYI they don’t take 100$ bills, in fact not many places take them. I TOLD him to bring 50’s…………….

The carpenter drilled a whole in the wiring while we were there, so the power went out. I also forgot to mention (mostly because I havent written it yet, but its almost here) that while at La Petit Auberge De Isle, the power went out there as well during dinner, but only for a few and no biggie. I was mostly miffed at the interruption of the Al Green CD ! At Church’s, it gave me time to get out of the car and take a picture of a lizard on a tree. Yes, I know, very exciting…………..

Back to the villa and while we are eating lunch, figuring all the comers & goers have come & gone, the pool guy shows up. Now, its no that I dont like people , but I just prefer to choose my company when I am in my bathing suit, or even lack there of !!!!!

Finally settled into a quiet afteroon by the pool, when about 30 yards from the pool in the yard I notice smoke rising. Then I see the flames. Then I start to panic. My first thought was towards my souvenirs and diamond bracelet in the safe! Andy went out to check it out , and it was simply a burn pile that the gardener had set afire. I think we underestimated his sneakiness…………….we thought all had gone… I flew in the bedroom………. OIE VEY !!
We quickly packed up and headed to “our beach”, Plum bay, for some privacy !Went snorkeling & swimming…lovely….
Came back to the villa to get cleaned up for dinner.
We finally found LaPetite Auberge De Isles .
LOVE LY LOVELY LOVELY!

Sat next to the walkway, warm breeze blowing………..did I mention it was lovely??
Andy had the shrimp provencal, and I tried the price fix menu, which is a appetizer, main dish, and dessert for 25$ ( I think).I tried the special which was roast beef with mushrooms & onion in a wine sauce, mashed potatoes& green beans.
I had the French onion soup, and Andy had the fish soup – BIG SURPRISE….both were excellent! Main dish was very good, but really folks whats important here?? DESSERT!!! Home made WARM chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream & whipped cream……..PLUS a gooey chocolaty center??? Ok I have to stop talking about that before I empty the cupboards!!

We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio, yes I know I had red meat – shoulda been a red, but I LIKE that stuff…it was wonderful!
The whole time we were eating AL GREEN is playing in the background! Talk about ROMANTIC! The music selection for the evening was his wife’s choice – I never did get the mans name who waited on us, or his wife’s name, but I am assuming they are the owners, and I know they are very nice gracious people!
I told them I was steered here by TTOL, and they said Ray Mann? Yes, I said from his website as well! So he said it is tradition that we had to have an after dinner drink.
Well, we have never had an after dinner drink in our lives and we were both kinda looking at each other! He ran off a list a mile long of what I could order, I recognized Kahluha and Cointreau……chose the Ciontreau , Andy said it should be on the rocks (haha funny to even type that ) and Andy had Congnac. Mine was lovely, and his burned my throat. I liked the wine better though .
The food here was great, but the atmosphere was fabulous. Wonderful people, and lovely moon shining on the marina………..sniff…….. sniff……..lovely !

Day 13
Up early with my back killing me – this bed is TRASH! Getting sad about leaving the island, but not this bed. The wheel has come off the bed 4 times now and the headboard BANGS against the wall, even if your just turning over !!
Trying not to think about Saturday. I will be Scarlett and worry about that tomorrow…………..

Okay Okay , I do miss my kids. I have refused to admit it till now , but I will be glad to see them. They have told me that my babies (puppies) Maggie & Bo sit outside of the door to my room…sniff. …Sniff!

My watched stopped (I have had it for three years and it picks NOW to stop) so we went around trying to find a place to get another battery. Finally found DANNYS Electronic in Margot, and they fixed it for 5$ and were very nice as well!
Then went to the post office to mail post cards. Again so very exciting I know……….

Tried again to go to the Lido Lolo and man, was that gal rude! I went inside the grocery store to look around, and came out about 10 minutes later. Andy had been standing at the counter thingy waiting to order from the girl. She wouldn’t even look at him. I came over and asked if the ribs were ready yet – with a smile I might add- and get this, she looks at me LAUGHS, shakes her head, says Oh Honey something and walks away!! Un -believable! We just turned around and walked away. No friendly island thing going on there for sure!
Had heard about Pineapple Pets from SAY HEY JAY on the radio, so thought we would give it a try. Andy had fish & chips, and I tried the “special” Cajun shrimp wrap.
If ever I felt I would be sick from the food here it was now. It was simply horrible. I ate the fires, they were good, and just tried not to be rude. I don’t send things back in a restaurant, so that was not an option. The atmosphere and place itself were very nice, and the waiter was very warm and friendly. I should know not to order specials…are that code for stuff we can’t get rid of???

Went back to the villa. I think the heat and lack of water consumption ( having been replaced by Caribes, Heinekin and the Captain) is making my MS flare up a bit. I was overly tired, so I stayed in the AC fro a few hours. No beach today, just too out of it.

Decided to try Yvette’s for dinner. So looking forward to trying Creole food here. After some wrong turns and scary moments, we finally found it. It looked very charming, its located in her house, and we were warmly greeted. Sat down to study the menu’s for several minutes (15 or so?) then the gal came back. I had decided on the Lobster shrimp Creole….”Oh no, we don’t have any lobster”….okay, what about the chicken stew?…”Oh no its still baking”… it was 8:45…………
Finally just ordered the t-bone steak as I could feel her impatience with me growing. Andy ordered the kingfish. My steak was full of gristle and tasted old…Andy of course liked his fish. I am sorry, but I could not recommend this restaurant to anyone, I thought it was gross.
Not a very good gastronomical day !!

With the deluge of rain at the market ( left that part out) and the bad dining experiences, I needed ICE CREAM!!
We went to the Haagen daaz by Cheri’s . YUMMY! Got to see a bit of the show…they were doing the ELECTRIC SLIDE!!!!!!!!!!
Ya know, for some people, there are certain times when they wish there spouses were not in the immediate vicinity….this was one of those times ! I wanted so badly to go jump right in and dance till whenever, but thanks to our luxury villa mattress, Andy’s back was killing him ( he has one of those backs that likes to go out if he sneezes the wrong way)so anyway we just went home. He was really hurting by then , and I seem to have a constant stash of leftover vicodin from some breakage/surgery/birth/whatever and was really glad I brought it.

Day 14

We awake to find Andy barely able to get out of the bed of thorns. I gave him more magic ppills, and asked the maid if we could get some more somewhere. She said to just go to a pharmacy on the French side and they could help us without having to see a doctor. While they wouldn’t give us more vicodin ( RATS!) they did give us over the counter Tylenol with codeine 20 mg, and that worked well for him.
We were both very afraid of the flight home the next day as sitting is what causes him the most pain.

Went to Turtle Pier for breakfast. I had the fruitbowl……….I keep forgetting that this is not a “tropical island “ in the sense that ther is not a lot of locally gron fruit………it was just ok. Andy had a big breakfast, the homefries were very good.
Took some pictures of the dream villas on the way back.
Such a tourist!

Spent a lovely day by the pool and worked on getting rid of tan lines. Lost count of how many pitchers of Daiquiris. Got a bit red here and there, which is making me a bit anxious for the flight home as well. Went into the AC around 4:30 for a break from the heat. Andy woke me up at 7 …I had wasted HOURS on our last day sleeping, but my body takes what it needs especially when prompted by the Captain.

Andy told me I kept saying……………I Like Rum
Tried to go to SSBB for dinner but, how odd to say this, it was too cold to eat outside!

We went to Pizza Galley , its by Lee’s, and right next to what was the Lady C, and man oh man what good pizza ! Excellent thin crust, we ordered a JP special- pep, sausage, onions, green peppers & olives plus some garlic bread - $14 ! It was the perfect amount…we got the beers & diet coke from the Lady C ( she is in drydock). The restaurant is cute, comfortable, and the people were very friendly as well. A must for pizza on the island!

Andy REFUSED to take me to Le Shanteclair for the “un namable chocolate dessert”, so I had to settle for the “ losery Bounty coconut ice crean bar in the freezer at the villa” dessert! J/K….I was too full from the pizza to eat much more anyway!

As we passed through Maho, there was a show going on outside on e of the Casino’s with Dancers - we stopped right in the middle of the street to take a picture! Finally we had become island drivers!

Okay, lets just take a moment and talk about this whole subject of driving.
First of all here in Seattle, we have a pretty crappy traffic problem to deal with on a daily basis, so I am no stranger to bad drivers. At least I thought I wasn’t .
Oh how I longed for Andy’s 1985 Brown Beauty Suburban with a cow catcher on the front and trailer hitch on the back ( it rides pretty high) wishing it could be my traveling companion!

Wanna tailgate??OKAY ! Feel like passing in your hell on wheels scooter…OH my steering feels a bit LOOSE today !
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

Onward……………….

Day 15
I’m not as sad as I thought I would be to leave. I would however like to do the owner of this villa a favor to his future business and take this mattress out to the burn pile and add to the gardeners supply !

It’s been raining quite a bit since Thursday, and think our timing for missing rainy season was pretty good. I m sure it comes and goes.
I got eaten alive at Pizza Galley last night- my fault for neglecting the mosquito milk.

Andy is again refusing to indulge me by going to Zee’s and bringing me my choc croissants while I lay in my bed of thorns and try to sleep some more………

I have decided that I will not look at the evil scale upon my return for at least a week, maybe a month…………or two .
If” the liver is evil it needs to be punished”(lady C), then scales are the Devil himself and should be neglected entirely.

We decided not to bring any liquor back with us as we had a lot of airport wait time ahead of us, plus with us both being in such grand physical shape, we weren’t sure we could make it. We are however bringing back the empty Rum Jumbie bottle having left the almost entire content in the Captain Morgan’s bottle for Janelle, or whoever wanted it. We just couldn’t poor it down….seemed too disrespectful.

Our flight leaves at 11:30 SXM, arrives SETAC 11:30 ………….UGH……….I am staying in denial of the actual time difference……….

Looking forward to seeing the kids; so far there have been no battle wounds reported, seeing the puppies ( I feel I have missed out on important formative years), and DRUMROLL PLEASE………..sleeping in our OWN BED!!!! With our Nova form (?) pillow top foam thingy that molds to your body and our big fluffy PILLOWS!!

Have I mentioned about the bed in the villa???????????

The flight home was actually pretty good. We did however get stopped in CUSTOMS at SJU......the contraband Conch shell...which isnt really contraband if it comes from SXM and is as sad and pathetic looking as ours was......everyone at SJU was really freindly, except they took our paper tickets to get from Chicago to Seattle. Just a wee bit of a problem, but they let us on the flight anyway. PLUS they allowed us to go on the flight that was leaving in 10 minutes instead of waiting for two hours !! YAY! Miracle of miracles, our bags arrived too!
Watched hidalgo & Fifty first dates on the way home, but man we are both done flying for a while !

Overall , we have met many wonderful people here on the island, and had great experiences. We have also met some real jerks, but ya know my neighbor is a jerk so there ya go.

The TTOL party was a great time, so nice to put a face with a name!
We were surprised at the slowness of service, which we really didn’t mind cause we were never in a hurry , but it seemed more to us like “ I don’t really give a s**t” attitude instead. And for sure it was not everywhere that we encountered that.

We will choose to remember the fabulous times we had, and laugh at the ridiculous, bad things that happened. It was a 20th anniversary trip of a lifetime, and we do not regret a minute ( okay maybe I would redo a few things differently, but not much)!

A huge amount of MAD PROPS to all who answered my questions and put up with my naiveté……………..you REALLY made a difference to us !

I don’t know when we will be going back, but it has made us realize we NEED this , that an alone vacation must be a PRIORITY for us, and we would like to see the world a little bit, like Cabo, or Hawaii.

And so , in closing, thanks again, and we will always have SXM !!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,
Leighanna
P.S. Alas...no raspberry sauce was to be found on island......
