Here is the story…We were returning to el Zafiro from Chesterfield’s on our 39th anniversary on Nov. 6th. We saw about 3 dogs run across the road near the Salt Pond. The 3rd puppy hit a van tire as it was moving, and got rolled back off the road. We pulled over and he came over wagging his puppy tail. We picked him up. Sad, so skinny, starving, INFESTED with ticks and fleas…we contacted SXM Paws. They had a foster come and pick him up and the story goes on with fosters, etc. as posted on Dec. 14th on SXM Paws Facebook page. SXM Paws helped our puppy get off the island and found Pilots N Paws who flew him from New York to Erie on Dec. 12th.
As was stated in original SXM Paws post, it takes a village…Thanks to Diana, her family, Steve the pilot, and everyone involved. Thor, now, Freddie is happy and healthy for the rest of his life thanks to all of you.
I thought our TTOL friends would like to hear about Freddie as well. I tried to add a small video, but can't figure it out. haha

Good for you and great for Freddie!!! Thanks for posting! I have been thinking I need to contact them the next time we go to the island, to see if we can bring a pup back to Miami with us, if one needs transport.

Our pups now are both rescues (from the US) and we love them dearly.

Didn't realize how much Freddie resembles our previous greyhound, Mercedes, in our profile picture. She was 12 when she passed MANY years ago.

Carol- I'll bet they will be glad to have you take a pup. If they don't have any available, Ursula with the I Love My Island Dog Association usually has an abundance of puppies, which she keeps at her house or with fosters, since her shelter was destroyed by Irma.

As of now, I would be interested in just making sure one gets accompanied to the states, not adopting for myself.

We have escorted pups twice for ILMID. As we land in JFK, they were picked up by Sue of Island Puppy Rescue International who works in conjunction with Ursula. Perhaps you can contact Sue to see if she knows of any rescues in your area who would take a puppy. Let me know if you need any contact info.

Hi. I'm not going until June, so I will hook up with them much closer.

Yes. Ursula is awesome as well and has been trying to help the dog population for decades. We have been to her house and to her pre Irma shelter. Donated money, food.. We have been watching this for decades as well. it is sad that there are still puppies and dogs, cats that are homeless and running free. So many cats in Maho... But, guess it is the same anywhere. All of our pets through the decades have been rescues and greyhound retirees. We have a history with Freddie since the first second we saw him get rolled off the road.

SXM Paws and the others are doing God’s work on Earth for these dogs. We adopted last time we were there. Here’s the initial post we saw. We have been able to locate his brother in Texas and sisters in Rhode Island and New Hampshire. Meet Beau and his DNA results. He’s an amazing companion.
