KEY WEST Day 4 (Conclusion)

Is it really over?.....Nah! we still have 4 more hours until we need to be at the airport, SUNRISE ANYONE!!! All 3 of us woke early and walked down peaceful Duval Street towards the Southern Most pier to watch our last sunrise of the trip. It didn't disappoint!

A beautiful sunrise like this should not be missed, EVER! I know, I know, life and other stuff gets in the way sometimes, but if you're a late riser on vacations make it a point to set the alarm just one morning so you can say you did it! Funny thing this particular morning, we saw a disheveled 20 something shuffling onto the pier by himself, he really looked like SH&!, He smiled at us and asked "did I miss it?" we said no, it's beautiful....he asked if I would take his picture with his phone and I did....he said he was on his last day of his bachelor party trip and told people he would see a sunrise! He then said "I can't wait to get married so I never have to feel like this again" Priceless!

After another majestic sunrise we wandered over to "The Southern Most Point" for the mandatory 1st timers photo-op! Perfect timing, there was only one other family posing with "The POINT", they were nice enough to digitally record the moment for us!

Well.....that's that! All of the mandatory photo's for this trip have been taken... whose hungry?! We have walked by the Banana Cafe on Duval several times, each time saying "this looks nice!". This is where we would have our last breakfast in wonderful Key West. My wife had delicious crepe's and my daughter and I had BLT's with literally a half pound of bacon, I mean like 10 pieces of perfectly cooked B, all on a crispy baguette with fresh L and T, and a homemade mayo, perfect! They have large open windows which allowed us to enjoy the breeze and the sounds of distance roosters crowing. I can absolutely recommend this place, the food and service was great!

We had packed earlier so all we had to do was drag our feet a bit. Check out at the condo took all of 2 minutes and with our red mustangs top down we were off to Starbucks. Not wanting the trip to end we drove slowly through town with our overpriced coffee and chai teas, tasty though! We decided to drive the south shore towards the airport and stop at Smather's Beach. We had intended to make this one of our beach days, but life and other stuff got in the way! There was plenty of parking along the couple mile stretch of South Roosevelt Boulevard that buffers Smather's Beach. Wow.....what a beautiful beach! and for those that have been taking mental notes....the sand was much softer and the beach much wider here, nice!

The ladies got to put their toes in the sand one last time!

I had a feeling the 2 hour rule for checking through TSA would not be required here on a Friday, but really I didn't know? but we took a "chance" and returned the car exactly 2 hours before our departure time (took 2 minutes), took the elevator up one level and the risk takers checked through security 1 hour and 45 minutes prior, sheeew made it! Now what do we do with all this down time?....not to worry we found the most amazing airport lounge we've ever seen! BEER ME!!!

Wonderful, Beerman, just wonderful.
Always great to read and view the fanastic photos in your reports.
And I learned a couple of things on your EYW report too. Much better than the typical travel writer report.

Markis have a great trip! Tip#1 Be careful with the a/c and your camera lens, if lens fogs keep clicking you might luck out as I did here...

Tip#2 - Don't forget to look up once in a while!

Yep....we arrive on Aug 1. Our son celebrates his 16th on August 6 on STJ. Can't wait. Maybe you'll be in the neighborhood one day.

Really enjoyed all your reports. They make me want to go back to KW for longer than just a cruise stop. Beautiful pictures, too!

That was one of the best trip reports I've read in a long while. The photos were so beautifully serene and tropically idyllic that one could almost forget that your Key West trip coincided with a onslaught of spring breakers during this week.

My goodness, deserted beaches and cafes not filled to capacity. One would have thought nearby Duval Street was bursting at the seams during the afternoon from cruise ship passengers and the college crowd.

Thanks for the kind words everybody! I was also surprised at how relatively un-crowded the town felt during this spring break. I think our sightseeing and dinner hours might have been just off enough that we lucked out Keep in mind also that we didn't belly up to too many popular bars at night, they usually looked packed Even Mallory Square was not "jammed packed" at sunset. I saw 2 cruise ships in port at the same time one day, but my guess is that they get underway at sunset? saw one ship departing while we sat the rail at Mallory Square.
