I've checked their website but I can't find if liability insurance is covered in the quote. (It was for our last trip in March). I've tried contacting them via email but I haven't received a response. Any one rented from them recently that can help??

Hertz still offers liability insurance on rentals. below is the statement from their site as well as a link to the full FAQ page.

Q. What is the price of 3rd Party Liability Insurance when I rent from Hertz in St. Maarten?
A. We are happy to offer all of our customers complimentary 3rd party liability insurance.

Does it matter if you book through hertz.com vs. https://hertz.sxmrentacar.com/?

We have a reservation through Hertz.com, so I’m just hoping the free liability isn’t only offered to those booking through the other site.

We have booked in the past both directly with Hertz SXM and also through the main Hertz.com website. In both cases, the third-party liability insurance was included in the price quoted.

We’ve rented from a local company for our previous trips to SXM, but we found a really great price at Hertz. It’s $129 total for a weekly rental. Every other quote we’ve seen is at least twice that, so we’re sticking with Hertz for now. We’re not traveling for several months, though.

Pretty sure Hertz SXM is locally owned.

Yes, that’s what I’ve gathered here previously. Regardless, I’m mainly looking for a company that has been positively reviewed here and is affordable. If it was a few dollars difference, I’d most likely just go with one of the two companies we’ve used before. However, $129 is hard to beat, and Hertz seems to be reputable based on what’s been posted by others.

As others have said, Hertz SXM is a locally-owned and operated franchise. In fact, all the car rental agencies on the island are owned and operated by locals. Similar to other places in the world, none of those representing international firms are corporate-owned.

We're in the same boat. We normally rent from Michael at Unity, but got an unbelievable rate ($15.74 per day) from Hertz as part of our ticketing process with Delta. If it wasn't more than 50% off we would have stayed local. Sorry Michael. We're there in February.

Just to reiterate all the posts above. You ARE staying local. Hertz USA has absolutely NOTHING to do with Hertz SXM, other than receiving a franchise fee from the LOCAL owners of the Hertz SXM operation. I don't understand why this concept is so difficult to grasp? smashpc

I just returned and paid 673 for 4 weeks with Hertz. Booked a corolla but they gave me an upgrade which was really nice to have. No big deal returning vehicle. They just checked the fuel guage, gave a quick walk around, saw spare tire and I was on my way to the airport in their van. Recieved final bill via email for booked price within hours.

i’ll add that after using a “local company “ for the past couple of trips, we’re currently reserved with “locally owned” Hertz for our next trip because the rate we’re getting for this trip is waaaay less than anyone else due to a corporate discount code we’re using…i mentioned this when returning our rental last week, and the local company said to contact them and they would consider matching Hertz’s offer…will consider doing so

also, one person’s upgrade is another person’s downgrade…we received an “upgrade” last trip, but for us the larger vehicle was really a downgrade….for the island we much prefer a small hatchback to a larger sedan

Why did you take the "upgrade" if it's not what you wanted?

DandM--Agreed, our guy tried to give us an SUV one time, instead of our standard Corolla and I said "no thanks", as I despise having to crawl UP into a vehicle, and he gave us a standard, beat up Corolla and I was happy! smile

SXMScubaman's posts from years ago convinced us to try Hertz versus a history of using a local supplier who picked you up at the airport. 16-18 trips later, we still have yet to find someone cheaper than Hertz. I got quotes for three cars this trip for our next family trip from HertzSXM, Kenny's, Exclusive, and Sax, for rental periods of 10, 14, and 29 days. After including liability insurance, taxes, and fees, Hertz was lowest by 18%, 32% and 8% for the three vehicles in total.

Personally, I don't see how anyone can rave about other rental companies' rates if they are including liability insurance, let alone a few companies who persist in quoting low rates and then add obscene "taxes and fees" at the end that are simply "mis-truths". As many have said before here, the only way to quote rental cars is one ALL-IN quote including Liability Insurance.

My assumption when someone raves about getting great rates from one supplier versus Hertz, is that they do not get liability insurance, or they don't ask for it as part of their quote and just assume the post-rental invoice add-ons are what they are.

Our upgrade was perfect for us. It was a Nissan Kick. A smaller SUV drove and handled St Maarten roads perfectly. Plenty of power with four people climbing hills and small enough for easy parking.

I received a quote of $671 from Hertz for my 30 days. I received a higher quote from Leisure, whom I have used for several years. I don't like the idea of a shuttle from the airport so contacted Leisure, who said they would match Hertz's quote. I am happy with my decision.

Avoiding the shuttle was very important to us when we rented in December. Now that we're vaccinated, it's not quite as much of a concern. However, it would definitely be nice to just get in the car at the airport again. That's something I would pay extra for, and a good reason to go with one company over another, but I'm not sure it's worth paying $200 more for just a week.

Both times arriving and going back to airport we were the only passengers in the shuttle. Wasn't a concern for us as all arriving and departure people had to have tested negative.

Rental agencies in SXM are required to carry liability insurance that covers their renters. If you pay an additional fee for liability insurance, you are just paying the agency back for something they're required to have anyway. You are not getting any additional coverage.

So true but many agencies on island add it on to non knowledgeable tourists as an expensive add on.

Which is exactly why I mentioned it here. To state that Hertz includes liability insurance in their quote is misleading, and infers a benefit that doesn't really exist,

I beg to differ. It just states it's included with rental so people know they have it and not worrying they don't since many unscrupulous agencies charge extra for it and not informing them it's already there.

Not misleading but being informative as opposed to others who charge for something that is, if fact, probably included. SO you have a choice to assume it is included by what you read here or HAVE it included by the statements in the rental agreement ...your choice

Any agency that has a choice for ADDED liability insurance should be questioned

Do you include the liability in your original quote or is it an add on option?

Liability is optional period . To enlighten you , I just helped two of my customers to get reimburse for $ $ 11,000.00 each for two of my stolen cars new cars . Go figure and now the local insurance companies e.g Nagico is no longer offer Comprehensive insurance any more . And I didn't charge them the $ 10.00 per day for the collision , before the the cars were stolen. Thirty years working for myself and before that , at Holiday Car Rental at Mullet Bay Resort. Pure facts.
Some of you Folks keep talking about money , like we out rip people off . Their credit cards company reimbursed them their money and we never take deposit from people with their credit cards . Please don't scratch their car because lol.

So you charge extra for the liability that is required by the agency to provide it to rent a car. Thanks for that clarification.
