This past weekend, my wife and I spent the weekend at Avalon in Paw Paw, West Virginia. They were holding the first, and hopefully annual, Civil War Reenactment at a nudist resort. Yes, I know, an odd combination at best! By early Saturday morning, white tents were pitched on the front lawn, and the poolroom became a dressing room where outfits for both sexes were available for those who wished to enlist for the day. While there were only about three real reenactors there, the ranks were filled by members. Some had specific rolls, such as the lady of the evening whose bloomers had strategically place access holes, and the ministers wife whose cow had ended up in the camp stew pot! A number of members, young and old, both in and out of uniform tried their hand at firing the civil war era rifles. To see a line of soldiers, one with no clothes firing is a sight to see!
That evening the early part of the dance was given over to the Virginia reel and a hat dance. The lodge had displays of Civil War era artifacts as well as Civil War flags. The laughter and applause was accompanied the reenactors all day, and night. This was not your classical reenactment, but rather a fun filled day where two worlds often thought of as a tad strange, blended well.
